Plans revealed for the launch of a major new North West Design Show in 2008 | Print |  Email to a friend
Tuesday, 17 April 2007
East London Design Show (ELDS) and Design Initiative (DI), are pooling their resources to create a social enterprise, which will be their vehicle to launch what they claim will be the North West’s first ever major design show, to be held in Liverpool over four days in June 2008.

The project is still fund-raising but the organisers are confident the required start-up six figure investment will be raised.

Initial public sector support has come from the Liverpool Culture Company, Arts Council England North West, Merseyside ACME, Liverpool city council and the NWDA. Private sector partners include Room Restaurants and two hotels: 62 Castle Street and the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza.

DI and ELDS have been working on the plans for over two years.

Design Initiative has regional knowledge of the creative design sector and its infrastructure while ELDS has gained experience running other design shows in the UK.

The North West Design Show (working title), aims to establish a ‘cutting-edge design show, selling contemporary design at its best’.

The launch of the show will tie in with Liverpool’s 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations and the organisers hope that it will subsequently become an annual Design Festival.

The show will take place in the Crypt of the Metropolitan Cathedral, which is close to JMU’s new ‘Design Academy’ where it’s expected a number of related events will take place.

Running from 18 to 22 June next year, the organisers are hoping that all 150 available stands will be sold in advance of an anticipated 7,000 paying guests and 2,000 trade guests and ‘VIPs’. Sales of the exhibition stands will be targeted at established and emerging designers, artists and crafts organisations. Prices of the stands have not yet been fixed.

In addition to finalising the funding arrangements, the two key individuals in the venture, Sarah Elderkin of DI and Della Tinsley of ELDS, are evaluating which marketing services suppliers the show will be commissioning.

The London-based PR firm, Cooke & Brand (a long term partner of ELDS) has been retained to co-ordinate national media activities.

Seven companies have been short listed for each of the two remaining categories: design and PR/marketing services. All - confirmed Elderkin - are based in the North West and the majority are based in Liverpool.

The initial budget for the design brief is believed to be worth around £50,000 while the regional PR and marketing account is said to be worth around £80,000. These figures are anticipated to rise as sales and stands are confirmed. The winning companies will be announced in early May. Della Tinsley of ELDS would not disclose the value of the national business awarded to Cooke & Brand.

ELDS established and manages the East London Design Show and has acquired a reputation for designing and staging ‘creative’ shows and events. Della Tinsley is a director of ELDS.

Not-for-profit DI was established in Liverpool in 1992 but has, since 2000, extended its remit to cover the whole North West.  DI delivers services, projects, events, trade missions and training to the design sector. Sarah Elderkin is DI’s development director.
