Only a week after appointing TBWA\Manchester to its £1m advertising account, ‘bottled tan’ firm Fake Bake has been in the headlines for the wrong reasons, thanks to the exploits of brand ambassador Sophie Anderton.
Anderton, who first rose to fame as the face (and body) of Gossard bras, hit the tabloid front pages this weekend when The News of The World caught her in an undercover sting. According to the paper the 30-year-old model was filmed snorting cocaine, before stripping out of her clothes and offering to have sex with an undercover reporter for £10,000. She apparently explained that she needed the money to buy a new house and told the NOTW man “I'm great at sex. I'll look great on your f***ing arm. I'm a supermodel.” This was probably not the kind of PR Fake Bake was hoping for when it signed her on a reported £100,000 a year contract in 2005. The deal saw her endorsing the product in media interviews, appearing in promotional material and talking up the treatment prior to jumping on her next ride in the reality TV merry-go-round. However, after her behaviour was revealed on Sunday the firm acted quickly to terminate their agreement. A statement released to Fleet Street on their behalf yesterday noted: “We operate a no-tolerance policy towards drug use, so feel we have been left with no alternative than to terminate Sophie's contract.”With a Fake Bake spokesperson informing How-Do that it was “likely” that Anderton would have been used in the 2008 re-launch of the product, thoughts then switched to the creative that TBWA are believed to be well underway with. However, the Didsbury based team quickly scotched any rumours of re-working the campaign, noting that Anderton was predominantly used as the PR face of the firm and hadn’t been brought on “in any way” to feature in their work, which is apparently set to roll out across Europe early next year. Speaking about Anderton the Fake Bake spokesperson went on to explain that she had already been given the option to renew the contract next year and, to her knowledge, the firm’s chiefs had been happy with her work for the brand. “It’s a great shame what’s happened,” she concluded.
