Sally Sykes has been named the new communications director for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
She will take up the role in a couple of months when she leaves Johnson and Johnson subsidiary DePuy International.
There she’s been leading a team of 25 people across four sites as a senior communications and public affairs practitioner. The HSE is relocating to Bootle and that’s where Sykes will now be based: "It’s a big job and I’ll have a team of 76 people," she told How-Do. "It’s a really positive progression in terms of my career and it’s so rare for a job like this to come up in the North West." She will oversee the building of the team as the HSE prepares to unveil its five year strategy for health and safety. "Sally’s successful track record in leading large multi-disciplinary teams and her understanding of public sector communications will be crucial in leading the strategic approach to regain HSE’s position as a modern proportionate regulator" said HSE chair Judith Hackitt. Sykes has previously worked at Astra Zeneca, Ciba-Geigy, Scottish & Newcastle, Littlewoods and Manchester Airport. In 2006 industry magazine PR Week named her as one of the 50 most influential PRs in the UK. She’s currently Treasurer Elect of the CIPR (Chartered Institute for Public Relations.)Sykes was also a judge of the inaugural How-Do Awards held this spring and had already confirmed her participation as a judge for the 2009 Awards prior to accepting this new role back in the North West.
