Chimney Pot Park The annual Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Presidents Awards held in London last week saw three North West winners and two commendations.
Over 1292 entries were received for this year’s awards - a record number. Nineteen North West agencies, companies and organisations were short listed and the three winning regional entries comprised an agency, a company and a local authority: SKV PR, Urban Splash and Stockport MBC. Iain Ratcliffe Stockport was also highly commended in the ‘Crisis Management’ category while Brazen PR was highly commended for its ‘Lambrini Fun In The Sun’ campaign in the consumer category.
Iain Ratcliffe, head of communications at Stockport said they were “absolutely delighted to win the ‘Community Campaign’ category. Particularly as just the previous week, we were chosen as Best Strategic Communicaters at the Public Sector Good Communications Awards.”
It was the second successive year the council’s comms team had scooped an award at the ceremony. The secret of their success said Ratcliffe is “hard work. We try to ensure we deliver what our residents tells us they want. We listen to them. It’s all about being relevant.”
Ratcliffe’s colleagues subsequently informed How-Do that he was also individually voted Local Government Communicator of the Year at the Good Communications Awards.
Lisa Ashurst picked up Urban Splash’s award for best ‘in house campaign’ in recognition of the developer’s campaign for its Chimney Pot Park initiative in Salford.
Ashurst Ashurst said the company had been using external PR agencies including Staniforths and Spin until five years ago. “However, the pace of the company’s growth had become so fast that it was felt the work should be brought in house. The decision was partially prompted by the growing volume of work but also because it was felt that the company’s culture instinctively required things to happen quickly and sometimes with external PRs, things can slow down. If I need to speak to Tom (Bloxham) then I know his door is always open. An external agency wouldn’t normally get that kind of access.” However she did stress that the company does still use PR agencies for tactical campaigns, particularly in regions where “we don’t know the local press and the local movers and shakers. For example we use Giraffe Communications in Birmingham and they are simply brilliant. They understand us implicitly.
"We also use Golley Slater in Bristol for our South West projects and Ptarmigan in Leeds for our Yorkshire developments.
“We’re chuffed to bits with this award. A lot of our buildings win awards so it’s nice to get recognition for our comms efforts too.”
SKV was the region’s sole wining agency collecting its award in the ‘Corporate and Financial PR campaign’ category.
Its winning campaign, Manchester Takes Manhattan, was on behalf of inward investment agency MIDAS, which is especially keen to promote Manchester’s professional and financial sectors.
Kennedy, Spinoza and Vesey One of the highlights of the campaign was the promotion of a delegation of financiers and professionals to New York, generating extensive media coverage on both sides of the Atlantic.
Andrew Spinoza, SKV's managing director, said: "Winning in the Corporate and Financial category is particularly pleasing as we have now won gold in the NW IPR awards two years running and it reflects our expertise in this area."
