The perpetual flow of bad news from the region's local newspaper groups seems to be continuing unabated, as the Carlisle-based CN Group confirms that it could be set to add to the job losses it announced at the tail end of last year with the closure of its printing plant in Barrow-in-Furness.
CN has now initiated a consultation with the 28 staff at its £6m printing plant in Barrow, which produces the North West Evening Mail.Although the facility only opened six years ago the management at the group is looking to close it and make efficiencies by moving printing over to its Carlisle plant. A statement from CN noted: "The group's finances continue to decline as advertisement revenues continue to be affected by the recession. "These proposed changes are not easy.....we have tried to minimise the risk to the quality of our titles and to ensure their continued strength in the communities they serve. "I would be very surprised if anyone noticed any changes to the newspaper." The title will continue to come out six evenings a week and no editorial positions are expected to be under threat. However, further job losses at company subsidiary J Catherall & Co (Printers) Limited in Hexham and within the advertising production and account departments could be set to bring the total number of threatened roles nearer to 40.
