The Middleton and North Manchester Guardian’s offices have been firebombed, but the paper still got out on time.
Fire tore through the front of the offices on Fountain Street and fire crews believe that petrol was poured through the letter box and set alight.
No-one was hurt during the incident.
 Arson However, it meant that staff had to run contingency plans that had been put in place in the wake of 9/11. Using the MEN’s Disaster Recovery Plan – a bank of computer terminals was set up for immediate use – ensuring publication on time. "Whoever did this wanted to stop the Middleton Guardian being published this week. Our disaster recovery plan was immediately put into operation with minimal disruption to news gathering and production,” said Guardian editor Gerry Sammon.
“We haven't missed an edition yet, and the coward who did this will be sadly disappointed that we are out this week as normal and on time. We won’t be intimidated.”
Since the fire members of the public have been contacting members of staff with messages of support.
Police have appealed for any witnesses to the incident to come forward. The Middleton Guardian is currently working with police to compile a list of possible suspects.
