Asian News, the MEN Media owned free monthly paper which circulates in Greater Manchester and East Lancashire, has ceased publishing its print edition.

The last edition was published on 27 July. The title will now concentrate on its digital version which will be edited by Shelina Begum who was previously the paper's chief reporter. She replaces Steve Hammond.

www.theasiannews.co.uk will now be MEN Media’s first purely digital publication.

The paper, which had a print run of 22,000 copies a month, was available at a number of pick up points across its distribution area.

Begum told How-Do that by concentrating on the web, she is hoping to introduce more news, music, entertainment and blogging, something which has proved extremely popular said Begum.

The website currently attracts over 200,000 hits per month and 41,000 visitors.

Begum said almost 20,000 visitors now follow the three main blogs on the site: the Deranged Marriage Diary, Bollywood Gossip and Bertie on the Ball, written by the Bolton Wanderers community cohesion officer.

Begum said “This is only the beginning. The website already is a portal for readers' views who can place their comments on it free. This important community resource is to be expanded. The website will soon be redesigned and we’re keen to increase interaction with our readers.”

Begum, 27, was born in Rochdale. She completed her NCTJ course in Liverpool on day release while working at the paper. In 2006 she was voted reporter of the year in the North West newspaper awards.

Outgoing Asian News editor, Steve Hammond, who is leaving the company said: "Shelina is a tremendous role model for Asian youngsters, particularly women.

"She comes from the most deprived section of British society - Bangladeshi women and has through her enthusiasm for her craft, hard work and dedication proved that anyone can succeed. She was a real find. I wish her all the luck in this new venture with Asian News."

Hammond launched Asian News in 1997 - the 50th anniversary of Indian and Pakistani independence.

In June, Asian Lite, a 20,000 free newspaper targeting Asian professionals across the UK was launched from Manchester by Anasudhin Azeez, who stressed his new paper would be “less focused on negativity than the other Asian titles in the market.”
