Big Issue reveals new Big Giveaway plans | Print |  Email to a friend
Monday, 17 November 2008
The new look Big Issue in the North is destined to get in front of hundreds of thousands of fresh eyes over the course of the next week, as the title launches its second ever Big Giveaway.

This will see over 250,000 taster magazines given away in a range of regional titles, including the MEN, the Liverpool Echo and the Preston Citizen.

The idea is to showcase the recently revamped magazine, providing people who may not usually purchase the Big Issue with a flavour of its regular news, features and campaigns.

In a development that is sure to draw in curious page flickers, the cover star of the Giveaway edition is Russell Brand.

Explaining more about the motivation behind the move, Kevin Gopal, Big Issue editor, said: “It is 15 years since The Big Issue in the North launched as an independent publication and we want to remind everyone why it still needs people’s support.

“There are lots of misconceptions about the magazine – that it’s all about homelessness for example when in fact it covers a wide range of subjects.

“There are probably people who haven’t bought the magazine for years and we want to let them see what it’s like now.

“The credit crunch is having an impact on everyone – we’ve seen sales per vendor decrease and though we can’t attribute that to any one factor we believe we need to remind people that buying The Big Issue in the North helps people who have no other means of earning an income, other than by selling the magazine, to get back on their feet.”

‘The Big Giveaway’ will be distributed in the Manchester Evening News on 17 November, the Liverpool Echo on the 15 and 22 November and the Preston Citizen between 13 and 20 November.
