Big Spark moves into local newspaper market with new title for Cheshire | Print |  Email to a friend

Big Spark Publishing has launched an audacious move into the newspaper sector, with the first of what it hopes will be many new local North West titles.

The Bury-based publisher, a regular on How-Do with its stable of consumer and customer publications, is set to launch the ‘Cheshire Independent’ in early February for the well-heeled Macclesfield, Prestbury, Alderley Edge and Wilmslow areas.

MD Stuart Parker (pictured above) told How-Do that he believes the free paper will fill ‘the void left by Newsquest's pull out from their Macclesfield base’ and feels that, despite the current downturn in the industry, there are opportunities in the sector for a new approach.

He said: “We are really thrilled to be launching in this affluent area with what we hope will be the first of many new regional local newspapers we have planned.”

The Independent is set to be a ‘good news’ title with a soft editorial style and 'parish pump' local news. It will have a monthly circulation initially and be available to pick up from a selection of local outlets such as pubs, leisure centres and supermarkets.

It will also be distributed directly to select homes in the area.

The title is scheduled to hit the presses for the first time on 10 February with a print run of 10,000.

Parker has recruited “the excellent” Robin Atkins as sales manager and said the paper was receiving significant interest.

He commented: “Having Robin on-board has given us a tremendous boost, we are now looking for other newspaper ad sales people in other areas who might be interested in joining us too at this exciting time.”

Self Select Distribution will handle the distribution brief, allowing advertisers to check ‘qualified delivery evidence’ online.

How many more publishers are going to launch in this so-called 'high profile' area? Households there already receive a broad selection of publications - and soon there will be more publications than advertisers!

I always find it amusing that publications like this and Cheshire Life, completely ignore the less fashionable areas of Cheshire. I've lived in Cheshire all my life but none of these publications appeal to me.

Phil, it's sad but true that Ellesmere Port and New Brighton just aren't as glam as Bollington.

Newsquest has shot itself in the foot with its short-sighted policy of backing out of Macc and a lot of other places in the region. They'll be back when times are better and I hope readers and businesses see them for the profit obsessed giant they are.

Good luck to Big Spark and any other independent publisher that has the guts to step in where others fear to tread.

Phil and mancunian,
Talk to us about the 'less glam' areas of Cheshire, if we can make it work we'll have a look at it. Macclesfield was an obvious first crack because Newsquest were pulling out.

10000 copies of a newspaper to service an area with at least 60000 homes? It can't even claim to be a 'targeted' publication. As a 'pick-up' newspaper they will have absolutely no control over who reeives it.

if the area is lacking local news coverage, people WILL pick it up. the story also states that it is being delivered to some homes, so there is limited individual targeting too.

The main question will be investing in the editorial.

Big Spark has to do this if it is to stand any chance of people actively looking to get one when they're at the shops etc.

Do this and it stands a good chance, specially given the big boys retreats from the region.

Macclesfield still has an established local newspaper the MEN-owned Macclesfield Express. Newsquest closed it's free Community News - a poor quality freebie that is unlikely to be missed, and one that definately has not left a 'void' as, editorially, it was c**p.

I agree with comment number 1 - why limit yourself to just this "trendy" sliver of Cheshire? There are plenty of areas outside the "footballer belt" that aren't already being targeted by a plethora of magazines hoping to attract ads for BMW dealers and designer clothes shops. It might be more beneficial to invest in areas which are still affluent but don't look so heavily towards Manchester, such as mid or south Cheshire.

Agree with the last comment as well--the Community News won't be missed, nor will most of the other rubbish Newsquest free rags.

Good luck to Bigspark and if they're ever interested in doing a serious newspaper instead of a nicey-nicey effort then give me a call. Believe it or not it's not being too serious that has led to newspapers' downturn, it's being too soft

How is this doing? Has anybody seen a copy yet?
