Big Spark Publishing in MBO from Cradley Print
The managing director of Big Spark Publishing based in Bury, Stuart Parker, has led an MBO of the company from Cradley Print for an undisclosed sum.

Parker set up the company for the Midlands based printer in January 2003. The company’s business was based primarily on customer magazines across the UK.

The company employs over 20 staff, mainly in editorial and production. There is an in-house sales operation but the majority of ad sales are contracted out to three sales houses: Petersham Publishing, Mediaforce and Gary Savage and Partners.

In 2005 the company relocated from Manchester to Bury. Two further offices have been opened this year: a sales operation in Leigh currently employing four staff and an office in Belfast with an additional four staff on editorial and production.

In June Big Spark acquired a 25% share in the West Country Times community newspaper titles.

Parker, who began his career in newspapers and was at one stage a marketing services manager at the Manchester Evening News told How-Do that: “These are exciting times.

“I plan to add new publications, buy some titles, develop the skills base and generally plan to move the company up to the next level.

“We have added to our basket of publications again over the last few weeks with a B2B title for the Northern Ireland Food and Drink Association. We have also been contracted by a wealthy individual to publish a high quality monthly 'lifestyle' magazine and are in the early stages of planning a monthly newspaper for a major construction association.

“On a separate note, we have been asked for advice and support from a monthly ethnic tabloid. So, long may it continue...all I need to do now is manage and fund the potential...no easy feat.”
