Brauner to edit Crain’s Manchester Business weekly newspaper
Steve Brauner, editor of the North West Evening Mail in Barrow is to be the editor of the forthcoming Crain’s Manchester Business weekly newspaper.

Crain’s, one of the US’ leading publishing houses, has chosen Steve Brauner to edit its first European business newspaper which is scheduled to launch in Manchester on Monday 3 December.

How-Do broke the news in May as a rumour but withheld information about the publisher.

The privately owned US company publishes 29 titles across the US and internationally. It currently publishes just four Crain’s city business papers: Detroit, Chicago, New York and Cleveland.

Publisher Arthur Porter told How-Do that they are planning two editions in December starting on 3 December, a further two editions in January and then weekly from February.

The paper will initially be controlled/free but intends to move as soon as possible to paid-for. Initial circulation is likely to be between 10,000 to 15,000.

Porter told How-Do that eight staff have now been recruited and a further 10 are being recruited.

Porter himself is well known in the regional advertising community having worked here for many years before going off to find his fortune in Florida.

Crain Comms Inc said that: “Crain’s Manchester Business, a new local weekly business newspaper, will be modelled on the established and successful model found throughout America.

“Crain’s Manchester Business will bring breaking local business news to the Greater Manchester area for senior management and small business owners.”

It is believed that the Manchester publication will be the test bed for further city launches in the UK.
Brauner has been editor of the NWEM for just over five years.
 
He has also been editor of North West Business Insider and was previously business editor of the Daily Post.

He told How-Do the opportunity was genuinely exciting and when he learnt how serious and substantial Crain’s was, the opportunity was too good to turn down.

He will join Crain's in mid October.

CN Newspapers have not identified his replacement yet.

Well well well....the return of Brauner from the Sticks. Insider was strongest when he was editor, it wasn't a property rag in those days - it used to run real news. 
 
Can't see the MEN investing in journos though to see this off...will be interesting to see if their US masters do give it time...  
 
If it works, the best (business) news in the region for many years.

Steve Brauner does a very unusual trick with his ear flaps which makes for a very entertaining Christmas party.

He may well prove to be a good editor for this manc organ...but pity his colleagues - he's a pain in the arse to work with and for. 
 
The trick will be to distinguish between real stories and conspiracies in the new paper...

Is the Old Hall Street-er a little teensy bit embarrassed by the sales of the post and echo which have gone into freefall, while Brauner's Barrow organ has been a huge success? Dearie me! We're not jealous or bitter are we? Brauner is a good operator who doesn't suffer idiots, and unfortunately there are plenty of them grinning and posturing in the post and echo.

i hear he's mellowed a bit lately - brauner's staff only cry every other day now.

Old Hall Street-er's assessment of Brauner bears no resemblance to the bloke who has just spent the past five years turning the Evening Mail into one of the most successful regional evening dailies in the realm. 
He may not suffer fools, but he has made lots of friends at Barrow.  
Mail staff have had the highest regard for his top notch journalistic skills, his quiet diplomacy, and his sparkling, often hilarious company on the newsroom floor and occassionally in the pub.
