Reports are filtering through this morning that the Guardian Media Group is believed to be in talks to sell the Manchester Evening News to rival publishing group Trinity Mirror.
Reports are filtering through this morning that the Guardian Media Group is believed to be in talks to sell the Manchester Evening News to rival publishing group Trinity Mirror.

At the time of writing How-Do had been in contact with parties at both GMG and Trinity, but was informed that neither was willing to comment on the matter as yet.

It is being suggested that GMG Regional Media is to be sold off in a bid to save jobs and continue with the Scott Trust's overarching objective of protecting the interests of national paper The Guardian.

A figure of £40m has been mooted for the sale, but, again, at the time of writing this could not be confirmed.

MEN staff that How-Do did manage to speak to informed us that they were unaware of any potential sale.

Both Trinity and GMG have suffered at the hands of the global downturn in advertising spend, with Trinity last year shedding some 800 staff and recently cutting back numbers at the Liverpool Daily Post, while GMG Regional Media has closed regional offices, altered it distribution model and made staff cuts in continued efforts to stem its losses.

Trinity Mirror currently prints GMG's Manchester titles.

How-Do will bring you more information as soon as we have it.

Update: GMG has now released the following statement to How-Do. A spokesperson has said that the group will make no further comment beyond this, nor will it confirm any details of the talks themselves.

"In line with its remit GMG keeps its portfolio under review on an ongoing basis.

Since the publication of the Digital Britain report we have been considering the potential for further consolidation within the regional press sector, and as part of this there have been some exploratory talks regarding our regional media business.

However these are at a very early stage and it is not clear whether they will progress or what the outcome is likely to be."

Surely the first thing GMG should do is shut down the loss making Channel M. Why pour money down the drain on a pointless channel!

Nah, Trinity doesn't need a little TV station to play with. It can easily partner up with a production company if needs be.

I find myself in the same boat at MEN Cynic.  
 
This is good news for the editorial staff and for the paper itself.  
 
It could be bad news for departments where duplication between the Liverpool and Manc titles exist - advertising perhaps - but more pointedly it will mean a clean out of the MEN's top management.  
 
I'll say no more on that subject.

MEN Cynic....out here in the real world, when businesses join together in a takeover, there is two of everything. The result is that duplicates get thrown overboard by the company which has done the taking over. So for a start it means bye-bye to the top tiers of execs and you can expect half the remaining staff of MEN Media to get the heave-ho as well as economies of scale kick in. Trinity has an infrastructure which can do most of what is needed. As for Channel M, who knows. Maybe they'll do a story on it tonight??? Not.

As it's Christmas, it would have been nice if How-Do had credited the original Telegraph source - their story went online at 1201 this morning. 
 
Also many reading this will know that a potential sale of the MEN etc to Trinity Mirror has been the subject of speculation for many months, if not years. It was even discussed in a MediaGuardian piece about the future of regional news groups. 
 
Is it finally about to happen? 
 
(Morning Spec. How-Do's sources were local, but yes The Telegraph beat us to it by a good few hours. The potential sale of the MEN has indeed been speculated on in the past, both here and on many other sites. Merry Christmas to you and to one and all! Ed)

Well it's no surprise this story is it? Most of the contibutors to this forum have known for a while that the MEN is up for sale. What I'm keen to know is - are the regional titles included in the sale or is just the MEN?

I think you'll find there's only two of some things. Editorial, sales and circulation will largely be untouched and indeed argubaly strengthened. Ad sales to agencies and direct clients should prove more efficient and indeed they now have a pan North West sales proposition. Watch out for NWDA support now they have regional spread. 
 
Some management functions in Manchester will go and possibly further admin/accounts functions will move to Liverpool. But overall, Trinity is getting this for a song. Strip out just £2/3m of costs - setting aside Channel M - and add this to a stablisising market and Trinity will pick up an operation whihc could contribute towards £10m next calendar year.  
 
Good on 'em and good for the MEN.

As someone who has seen TM rape the Birmingham titles of staff and its soul then I can only wish MEN all the best. You will need it. 
 
Interesting that TM can afford another title given the number of folk they've laid off in Brum over last 2 years.

Didn't mean to imply cluelessness, MEN Cynic, so apologies. Just not convinced that TM is going to treat this as some sort of exercise in philanthropy. TM have a reputation for paring to the bone and I don't believe they will take the same, somewhat benign, view that GMG had - despite recent events - when it comes to staffing. Another factor is that GMG chopped back to make the operation look good for a sale. TM's mantra will be; we've spent all this cash buying the bloody thing, so what can we quickly do to reduce costs and recover our outlay? Remember that TM, unlike MEN Media's parent company GMG, is a shareholder-owned company and that fact drives all of their business calculations. I hope that I'm wrong, but I predict a bloodbath.

Why would TM want a a loss making little watched TV channel. There is no other ITV Region available until the end of 2012 at the earliest - and that's only if Labour are re-elected. So for the next two and half years TM would be taking on what Channel M is - a loss making burden on GMG. Sell the spectrum to Man City to create MCFCTV on Freeview. Cut your losses.

TM hater, so many were laid off in Birmingham because it was losing shed-loads of cash. It's in no-one's interests to keep propping up a business which can't make money for itself, as the MEN knows full well due to its relationship with The Guardian.

The sell-off makes so much sense for GMG. If they get £40 million from the sale and suitably invest it, they will generate well in excess of £3 million a year in interest alone. 3 mill for doing nothing - far preferable to the messy job of having to run a business for a measily 500k profit per annum. And guaranteed too. That would go a long way towards paying for Rusbridger's piano lessons.

So now we kind of know where this is all headed.  
First GMG merges the weekly offices into Manchester. Then they bring in weekly newspaper journalists doing the jobs of MEN journalists on the cheap, and in the process cut staffing to the bare bone. 
If Trinity Mirror takes over it will cut out 'expensive' editorial staff and promote cheapo weekly journalists to do the job. 
Methinks MEN journalists ought to worry!

there's a certain inevitability to this due to the regional business' invidious position in relation to group. Namely, they will protect their resource heavy business at all costs regardless of whether the recent cost reductions at MEN Media guarantee an operating profit or not. TM will only buy if at a bargain basement price due to the structural decline of regional newspaper business'. However, unlike GMG, they will be able to rationalise that business veen further by sharing senior positions with Liverpool management for example, and other 'convergences' where feasible. Naturally, this will be bad news for a sizeable number of employees in most departments at MEN Media, while GMG will be happy to take a cash injection to temporaily delay inevitable further cost reduction at their end. The supreme irony that employess at MEN media have to deal with is that a campaigning liberal insitution such as GMG cares not what jot about either their heritage or the future oflocal journalism in Manchester.

Look. Remember the Scott Trust wording - go online and see it for yourself - it says the sole reason for the existence of the Scott Trust is to protect The Grauniad from commercial pressure IN PERPETUITY. That means protect the Grauniad, no matter what. All other priorities rescinded, as Mother the computer said in Alien when Ripley managed to hack in. So all this emotive language about GMG "not caring" or "blah blah blah" is to miss the point. The business has been programmed, since the Scott Trust was formed, to act, AT ALL TIMES, ONLY in a way which tends towards securing the future of the Guardian. It's unfortunate if a lot of people are only now learning this grim fact, but that is how it has been for many decades. Sorry for the CAPS but banging the desk doesn't show up in How Do.

I suspect that the winding up of the The Scott Trust doesn't mean the melody lingers in any way. The reasons given in the UK PG article (http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=1&storycode=42189) that covered the Scott Trust closure - announced on the news burying day of Gordon Brown's bank rescue package - made no sense whatsoever and came under very little scrutiny. I thought, at the time, cynical git that I am, that the move had some kind of ulterior agenda and that it let GMG do something that it couldn't otherwise do if the Trust remained. If any HD readers can enlighten me, on or off the record, I'm on tonymurray37@hotmail.com

Anyone who was labouring under the illusion that GMG had any more scruples than the average UK media company will be sadly disappointed by this inevitable piece of news. For the long-suffering staff in Scott Place this is just another kick in the proverbial. They should be used to it by now. Perhaps Mr Rushbridger will be able to use the influx of cash to convert his Berliner paper into A4.

The MEN was the "only" paper in the country who said that David Beckham wouldn't leave Man Utd for Real Madrid - and yet again this weekend the LONDON papers have "humiliated" the MEN regarding the changes at Man City. 
When it comes to our local sports clubs, Mancunians have come to rely upon the LONDON papers to find out what's really going on - and not the MEN. (Also Sir Alex Ferguson will give indepth interviews to the Daily Mail & LONDON papers, but he won't to the MEN. Why?) 
 
So stop blaming the recession, stop blaming the internet - and take a look at the people who have been running the MEN over the past few years instead!! Because it had become an out-of-touch paper anyway!

HUGE losses? Let's see the figures you're basing that on. Channel M's finances compared to that of MEN/GMG have always been completely insignificant.  
 
It's publications like the Observer and the Grauniad that make huge losses and should be canned but that kind of defeats the purpose of the GMG!

The "core purpose" is the protection, in perpertuity, of the Guardian.

I read the MEN and it said channel m will be on Freeview in the new year. I assume that means it stays on Sky and cable too? 
 
seems to be a lot of negativity re channel m?? fills a gap and makes some decent content as far as I can tell. the MENs website is full of channel m video content so they're obviously doing that for the MEN as well.

Captain Chaos: I have no axe to grind at all, indeed I'm with Maureen, Channel M fills a gap. But I did see the letter they sent out (I work in PR in the city). Referring to potentially how many new viewers it would have and how much greater exposure it would offer outfits it covers sounds like a boast in my eyes. You're taking it as me criticising them, I wasn't.

I agree with Mike (also work in PR in the city!). Channel M does seem to make boasts that it can't justify. However that seems to be something that MEN Media generally excels in. In saying that, I wish them success as at least they are providing a service.  
 
If Trinity Mirror do buy them though I can't see them keeping it going as it is something of an albatros...

They proved with their LIVE TV (news bunny etc) effort that Newspapers trying to run TV stations just doesn't work properly....UNLESS you bring in professional TV people. Probably explains why channel m has hung in there, plenty of TV bods involved with virtually no print hacks f*$king it up!

half the channel m slagging off on here is from the MEN print journos!! 
it's a medium they don't understand, don't see the positives and have shown very little inclination to get involved with. Happy to blame it for their cushy jobs becoming redundant though. 
As captain chaos states...the truth is very much different to the picture you paint. (you're not a weekly hack who believes the future is greater pagination are you??) 
 
MEN Media is about content not papers. PAPERS ARE DEAD. content is king.

The reason that Channel M isn't on Freeview is that the cheapskate management put all their faith in an in-house whizzkid who said he could build their own transmitter for them. Apparently he ordered all the parts from Exchange & Mart (or some such organ) and guess what! Another Guardian Regional media Group triumph that ends in a f**k up. There is a long history of this sort of think at the MEN - like the anxiously-awaited colour press saga of the 1980s which resulted in two mismatched lumps of old technology being glued together to form a whole that any expert would have condemned out of hand. Guess what! It was done on the cheap but had to be replaced with a "real" one costing 20 times more. MEN mismanagement has a long and undistinguished history and Dodson is keeping up its finest traditions. No wonder editor Horrocks jumped ship in a hurry!!

Maureen's saucy sister, Captain Chaos et al, Channel M's journalism is very much the journalism which comes out of the MEN newsroom, and that is journalism which is aimed primarily at a print product. Why? Because that is where the money still is, and the signs are that the market is recovering. It'll never be what it was, but to suggest that content is king and that print is dead is to ignore the harsh reality of the situation: Content means jack all if it's not making money and at the moment, Channel M isn't making money. It is a drain on the MEN. Here's hoping it does cling on and prove it's worth, and perhaps the first step is stop making it look a cheap American cable channel

GMG have now wrecked the paper anyway! The "supposedly" Manchester "Evening" News is now "incapable" of reporting early morning weather related chaos on the Metrolink system, for a start. You have to wait till the next day for news of that. 
This is a serious problem for the city of MANCHESTER. 
 
(PS: Still no mention in the MEN yet about the possible sale either. Gosh, haven't they heard?)

Because there's nothing confirmed? Other than a vague statement from GMG, it's all rumour and speculation. Not that that would normally get in the way of the MEN writing an article about it! No doubt it's strangled from on high.

That's a brilliant story Del Boy, you should get into print journalism with an imagination like that. Although from reading between the lines, I'd say you already are an MEN staffer. 
 
From what I gather, the true story is that GMG didn't agree to even start buying the equipment until a couple of weeks ago.

Absolutely brilliant. The spectacularly dull-witted BBC Fan reminds me, once again, that so many people are completely and utterly literal. Irony is wasted on them. What's more, trying to explain irony to someone who doesn't get it in the first place is probably a waste of energy, but, for BBC Fan's benefit, here's how irony works; Scrooge notices that someone has been commenting on Christmas Eve. This fact rather tickles Scrooge, and so Scrooge adds a supposedly po-faced, scornful comment on Christmas Day wondering what kind of saddo wastes their time posting on How Do on Christmas Eve....Now do you geddit???? That, my BBC Fan friend, is irony. Look it up - and NOT on Wikipedia, if you don't mind. The only correct response to the Christmas Day Scrooge comment was....none at all. However, I've learned my lesson - I will put one of those dreadful winking emoticon things anytime I write something which is not meant to be taken literally. Scrooge, I think actually BBC Fan had your number and BBC Fan's one liner was quite amusing. But I'm guessing you come from some kind of print background so therefore have an automatic humour bypass because you are so terribly important. 
 
BBC Fan, while I agree with you on the MEN exclusive point (Yates' Wine Lodge is more exclusive than the average MEN splash), I would point out that often they put "exclusive" on rewritten press releases which have ALREADY been sent to the rest of the media. A pox on all your houses!

There has been a lot of commentary this past year about Channel M being a draw on the resources of MEN. Given that the MEN is struggling on a constantly eroding route, would it not be best to put its resources firmly into Channel M which at least fills a need that exists and furthermore, can also(at present) only be filled by itself. Unlike the print thing that nobody really rates.

Posting an hour before midnight on New Years Eve on top of your 'ironic' Christmas morning comment. I'm splitting my sides. Please tell me you have a blog where I can follow your humourous asides. Lets face it this sale is in some kind of final stages and we will all be hearing about it soon enough. Channel M could have finally drained it's last £££'s and sank a grand ship. I guess on another note it might not be such a bad thing safe guarding the Guardian, at least it's worth reading.
