Business North West magazine arrives at last | Print |  Email to a friend

Business North West magazine arrives at last
Six months after we first revealed that Business North West was relaunching, it’s finally set to hit “business leaders”’ desks this week.

Publisher Eddie Samuel told How-Do that a print run of 10,640 magazines was sent out on Friday last week.

“It’s better late than never, but I’m very, very happy with the product,” he said.

“Launching a magazine is difficult enough, notwithstanding the current climate. Yes there have been a few little indifference's along the way, which put a delay on it.”

Samuel
Samuel worked on the original magazine, back in the 90s, but this time around there had been some teething problems.

Shortly after tying up a deal with Business Link (1 of 3 founding partners), the magazine’s website had to change address, pushing the delayed April launch back even further.

Head-turning

The publication will start as a bi-monthly “until it is up and running” and Samuel is confident that it has the quality to survive in an already crowded market:

“It will turn a few heads. I’m very please with the image of the publication. It’s fresh and clean.”

The launch issue has features on Manchester, Google and Sport in Business. There’s also an article on second founding partner Mere Golf and Country Club.

The third founding partner is Business North West Exhibitions, with which it’s built up the 10,000 plus database.

All the partners have signed up for a year.

One comment that tends to get posted whenever a BNW story is put online is about the publication’s North West credentials, so How-Do put this to Samuel:

“Yes, I do spent a lot of time in France, but Mellor Media is based in the UK. We have certain areas of business and offices in the North West.”

We weren't able to ascertain who wrote the stories, except that it was "patch based" and not through freelance staff.

A full list of features for this edition can be viewed here.

Tough out there? Not much! Good for you Publisher. A few more wouldn't go amiss. Hope the mag looks as good as it sounds.......

Publisher - if you have a north west base; if you are not relying on freelancers, and you are proud of your new magazine (which is great), then why don't you publicise your address, your office contact numbers and staff contact names?

Do you have a problem with this?

I'm curious - what exactly constitutes a 'founding partner' in this case? Do they have shares in the business or are they merely businesses/organisations booking a series of ads?

In this era of instant communications what exactly can any bi-monthly publication bring to the party? Surely nothing that can't already be accessed in a few seconds.
Having said that, good on you for having a go!

James - it says inside Business North West magazine that it is, "published by Mellor Media, West Hill, Dartford, Kent".

Possibly the worst cover design of a launch magazine I've seen for a long time.

Sorry but not a patch on North West Insider.

I received a copy. Very disappointing really. i think the pre-launch hype was more interesting.

Just got my copy through this morning and like Gordon have to agree at being very disappointed following the hype. Have to agree with Mike too that both the front cover and page layout are poor.

If you want to read a good interview with Metrolink's Philip Purdy by the way I would head over to Manchester Confidential.

Saw magazine very Poor - Mere is the old blackmail advertising, cant see this surviving.

Have seen magazine, not overly impressed.

To clarify the freelance writer/editor has contacted me regarding an article and is based in the South of England, the publisher Samuel they told me lives and works in France and the freelance features writer if I recall correctly is in Milton Keynes.

The Northwest connection If I understand it is Samuel once worked here.

The web site hasn't materialised with the magazine and the magazine was published three months late. Whether this is due to his previous business partner fallout and I hear current litigation against Samuel or the reason he gave as losing his domain name who knows? It doesn't take 3 months to reserve a new domain does it..?

From what I can gather, 'supplier support' advertising is Mellor Media's bread and butter. This virtual blackmail went out with the ark and, in my opinion, there is no place for it in today's modern business media.

I know the Publisher well and he GUARANTEED me that there would be a sudden string of 'bad' emails, different names but probably all a similar source.

He refuses to comment but I know that he had no partners, no contracts, and no financial input from other sources, nothing.

The mag's not amazing but looks good, and to launch in this climate desrves a pat on the back. In fact I know that emails are coming into BNW congratulating the look and feel of the mag.

That means something as it can be verified, rather than bogus invisble comments.

I saw a copy of this yesterday. I really have tried to identify one aspect of it deserving of at least some praise (as you naturally want to show support for people trying to buck the current trend of closures), but it is rather poor to say the least.

Alan D. I, too, know the publisher - probably much better than you. All this nonsense about conspiracy theories etc can't detract from the facts. The publication was three months late (based on his own predictions) and, in my opinion, it is not going to be a threat to any of the existing business publications.

Reagrdless of any background stuff (which is immaterial now) I have also seen the magazine now;along with a colleague of mine, an ex. UK Publkisher of the Year; and we are surprised at the in the main negaitive feedback on this publication launch.

It's fresh, different, user firendly, and well laid out, but we appreciate there is a long way to go.

I am also personally aware of positive feedback from senior personnel at GMPTE, Barclays, Co-op, major venues, and other governmantal bodies, which has been received by BNW in the last few days.

Finally, although it's a free world, these jibes are making a mockery of the purpose of How-Do; a well respected web site. I'd think about drawing a veil over this article too guys if I were you - it's starting to smack of 'dirty tricks' again.......

When I was approached to include an article in this magazine I was told that an ex UK publisher of the year is a consultant to Samuel.....

Is Tub Samuel then..? If he is personally aware of feedback he must be..?

This explains his comments about jibes...and wanting to stop any more feedback as the users of how-do, a well respected site, are evidently not impressed, I also hear they have great counsellors in france for paranoid people who feel the worlds out to get them....

The boy who cried wolf.
Samuel stated in February that 'ABC is in progress', he has still not applied for ABC status. This is not the only way in which the company has proved unreliable as regulars will note.
It is disturbing that How Do will trott out his statements about circulation as fact.
Please, How Do, consider checking facts before reguritating publishers blurb. This industry is rife with clowns and sometimes they need a relality check.
Samuel, publish your postal invoice and we might believe you.

Just logged on to see more activity on this article, amazing publicity! Now another article up top from the Publisher. Great free PR!

Backing off with comments on this now though as I think this 'j powell' might boil my poodles!

This thread reads better if you play the "Coronation Street" theme tune in the background!
 19 By KB, on 15-09-2009 18:28
Has anyone seen a second edition of this? Or have I just been left in the darK?! Not seen another issue since it's re-launch....
 20 By Jeremy, on 15-09-2009 23:25
It appears to me that this is another example of 'spin' above substance. Where is the confident publisher now?
 21 By Lee, on 08-10-2009 17:50
After all the initial fuss, what happened to this?
 22 By Paul Richards, on 23-01-2010 11:24
Despite the pre-relaunch hiatus, can we take it that this will not appear again? The once 'gobby' publisher now appears be a shrunken violet.

As many people above noted at the time, it really was a comedy of errors!
