Business North West Magazine re-launching after lengthy hiatus | Print |  Email to a friend

How-Doers with a long memory of regional publishing will be interested to read that Business North West Magazine is set to re-launch almost nine years after it was merged with seven other regional titles to become national publication Business 550.

The new look magazine is set to be distributed to 10,000 individuals in the regional business community from March, and looks to ‘compliment’ existing titles like EN and Insider.

BNW is being produced by Mellor Media and spearheaded by its owner Eddie Samuel.

Samuel worked on the original BNW in the 90s, in the position of sales manager, and now assumes the role of publishing director at the new look title.

He is joined by sales director Doug Ironside, who also worked at the former incarnation of the magazine as senior salesperson.

Together they have recruited Sue Watts and Graham Parker to run the editorial side of the business and are looking to launch on a bi-monthly frequency initially, with hopes to increase its appearances over the space of time.

Samuel told How-Do that the distribution database for BNW is “being formed as we speak” and that the team had already met with both the NWDA and Business Link Northwest.

When asked if the publication was being funded by either of the organisations he replied that that was “not the case yet.”

A launch document that Samuel forwarded on to How-Do outlined the editorial plans for the free title, noting that it will “carry general business news, along with special topical features covering all the relevant issues: legal, finance, corporate hospitality, business travel, property, construction, information technology and business equipment.”

Other content is set to include “lighter, entertaining sections such as ‘A Day in the Life Of’ a reputed business person, as well as insightful and enlightening interviews of well known successful individuals in business.”

An ‘executive moves section’, focus on individual development areas and editorial ‘last word’ will also feature on a regular basis.

The document went on to confirm that the title would be “politically unbiased” with “no axes to grind”, thus following in the tradition of the original BNW (which, for the record, ceased publication in 2000).

On the subject of the competition it was noted: “Finally, the team sees a genuine need in the North West for a high quality general business publication.

“There are currently two titles serving this community: Insider and EN.

“The content of the former is very much financially driven; the latter is focused on entrepreneurs.

“BNW will be geared towards new businesses, existing businesses and growing businesses - in fact all businesses regardless of size in the North West.

“BNW’s content will complement the value delivered by the other magazines in the sector, creating a trio of magazines that can serve the North West in all areas of business.”

In terms of the commercial side of the business Samuel is currently looking to enlist ‘founding partners’, who, for a fee of £5,000, will receive a tailored package that will guarantee them coverage in the title for the first 12 months of publication.

This will also, according to the document, “ensure that BNW presents a credible, high quality publication at launch, and delivers it to the key individuals in the North West business community.”

Hats off to these guys - business advertsiers in the North West need something credible backed up by an audited audience. All the best of luck.

Excellent, can't wait to see it! It's time for a change. Good luck to all involved.

I don't think Martin regan will be losing much sleep over this somehow!

Good luck to this project, however, I worry that there is no mention of the title on the company's website and no opportunity to subscribe, assuming it will be controlled free circulation. I don't hold out much hope of an audited circulation or a decent circulation at all for that matter.

ES - been on your website - no info other than contact details (all mobiles). Is this a new cottage industry or do you have an office base?

Thanks ES, still can't see a subs registration form. You are missing a trick or just not bothered about distribution. Its never too early to take subs.
Selling space before you have everything in place is a brave move.

Seriously considered another response but felt that it was appropriate for all to view under the circumstances.
Have spent the last 3 days in different meetings nationwide to clarify/finalise, and can now confirm a very focused and targeted database of circa 10,000. As previously stated ABC is in progress.
A Press Release will go close of play today with our 2009 Features List. Exact media breakdown and a Reg Form availability to follow shortly. All is in hand.
And yes we're selling space, and yes we're brave. What other way is there?

At the risk of starting another exchange of rants between the people involved in this - has it been published or is the idea now scrapped?
