Butterfield joined the regional business title last month following on from the departure of former editorial chief Andrew Calvert.

His first assignment was to oversee the contentious Hot 100 listings, which attempt to map the most profitable SMEs in Lancashire and Bolton.

This year Hargreave Hale topped the rankings, as the Blackpool-based stockbroker romped home with a pre-tax profit of £2.1m on a turnover of nearly £13m. The rest of the top five was filled out by W&G Harrison, Ascribe, Driver Group and Holchem Laboratories.

Butterfield, who spent 15 years as editor of the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, also interviewed the new chief executive of Lancashire County Council, Ged Fitzgerald, for the issue.
