Best-selling women’s monthly magazine Candis is celebrating the success of its business model after reaching a significant milestone in its donations to charity with the news that this year it will have raised £5m for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Established in 1962, Candis magazine sets aside ten percent of its income for health charities and community projects and since its launch it has raised over £50 million pounds for these causes.
Bryan Douglas-Dala, marketing director of the Hoylake-based publisher Newhall Publications (and grandson of the founder) said: “We’ve been a corporate partner of Marie Curie since 1998.
“In those eleven years our donations have helped numerous terminally ill people with end of life care. Home based Marie Curie nursing care costs £20 per hour so £5 million, representing 250,000 hours of nursing, is a fantastic contribution to their funding.
“The donations from Candis, made through Candis Club, to Marie Curie and the four other charities we support, come directly from magazine subscription income.
“It’s a unique business model for the magazine world and one which works very successfully.”
The founder of Candis, accountant Joseph Douglas, launched the magazine to raise money for cancer research, after he lost his son and friends to the disease. Newhall remains a family-run business and employs over 160 staff.
Candis is a subscription-only publication which currently sells around 300,000 copies a month ranking it the UK’s sixth best-selling women’s monthly. The editor Debbie Attewell was appointed in May 2007.
This year has seen a marked increase in the company's attempts to raise its profile with the media.
