Carlsberg pulls Sun promotion after Liverpool complaints | Print |  Email to a friend
Monday, 18 August 2008

Carlsberg has pulled out of a marketing campaign through The Sun following complaints from Liverpool fans.

Many Liverpudlians haven’t forgiven The Sun for its reporting of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 and there are still shops on Merseyside which refuse to stock it.

Carlsberg pulls Sun promotion after Liverpool complaints
Carling is one of Liverpool FC’s official sponsors and there had been plans in place to give away free pints through the red-top at the end of August.

However, when this was reported in trade magazine, The Publican on 12 August , fans responded angrily:

"I don't want any company with ties to that rag emblazoned on any Liverpool shirt, totally insensitive and naive, i'm disgusted.

"I'm not a liverpool fan but i agree with most here. Carlsberg and the s*n should be boycotted. The memory of the lost fans should be preserved. Carlsberg have stuck two fingers up to all pool fans by doing this.

"total insensitivity, I'm not stupid enough to think that these corporates actually care or consider us 'the fans, their customers' for one minute, but in our own small way, we'll no longer choose carlsberg any longer, it won't matter to carlsbergs profits but it matters to the memory of those that suffered and those that continue to suffer, Shame on Carlsberg!"

Carlsberg has since issued a statement apologising for "offence caused by the planned free pint promotion" and it has now been pulled.
