An independent North West publishing group is defying the current malaise permeating the region’s local newspaper industry with the launch of a new title for the Aintree and Maghull areas.

The 15,000 plus circulation Aintree and Maghull Champion is scheduled to hit the doorsteps of local properties on 14 January and is the work of the Southport based Champion Media Group.

CMG currently produces separate titles for the Southport, Formby, Ormskirk and Skelmersdale areas, and its fifth title will bolster the stable’s circulation to around 112,000.

MD Betty Drummond has commented that the group is bucking the trend of publishers such as Newsquest and Trinity Mirror - who have embarked on far-reaching regional cutbacks - to help advertisers continue to reach their target audiences.

She remarked on the launch: “We believe readers and advertisers deserve local newspapers that will support them in times of trouble and not turn tail and run."

At last... something positive to report about the regional press. Good luck to them!

I hope readers and advertisers support this move and give Newsquest and Trinity a black eye.

The question is will it be any good? Or will it just be a slip edition for its existing titles? I firmly believe that one day someone will awake the sleeping giant that is the regional press, but there's no signs of it recently. Problem is most half-decent people in regional press just pass through on to national press, leaving sceond and third raters in charge across the board...

The Champion already covers the Maghull area and distributes copies to houses in the town/suburb.

So it looks to me like they've just shuffled the mastheads of the existing newspapers.

(I'm not sure about Aintree - perhaps this is new territory or perhaps it's as above).

Tony Murray is right. As usual.

A wise man Tony Murray.
Perhaps the new local property paper there will awaken the giants.
