The team behind Chimp Magazine have been in touch with How-Do to impart some further details about the title’s launch issue, due out this Saturday.

After not having the time to speak when the original story of Chimp’s arrival ran, Giles Bastow and his associates put together the following release, which, amongst other things, details that the fact that the magazine will cost £1.80.
After not having the time to speak when the original story of Chimp’s arrival ran, Giles Bastow and his associates put together the following release, which, amongst other things, details the fact that the magazine will cost £1.80.

Here’s what they had to say:

The Chimp has been fantastically busy putting together a new magazine for the lovely people of Manchester.

In September 2008 ‘Awards For All’ kindly granted us £10,000 lottery funding in order to produce Chimp Magazine’s launch edition, and henceforth develop a volunteer scheme for those from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or areas.

King of the jungle?
We, like many social enterprises, were eligible to apply for funding as a Company Limited By Guarantee.

Chimp Magazine is an arts, entertainment and social commentary magazine for Manchester and aims to promote the work of charities, community groups and similar organisations.

Above all, Chimp Magazine will be a bloody good read!

Chimp swings into action on February 14th 2009, priced at £1.80 and available in newsagents and alternative outlets. Details to follow soon on the website,
www.chimpmagazine.co.uk

We have had an extraordinary level of support for this project and would like to thank everyone involved. From established journalists, comedians and writers, to artists and photographers.

Most of all, we would like to thank everyone who's given up their free time in order to get this off the ground. You know who you are. x.

Chimp is managed by Giles Bastow, Peter Williams and Alex Griffiths.

I really, really don't want to wade into this long-running debate on Chimp, but I can't help myself.

How are they going to combine the efforts of paid journos with those of "volunteers from disadvantaged areas"? Are they a non-profit social enterprise, run along the same lines as community radio stations like All FM (which pays no on-air contributors, just management and admin staff), or are they a for profit magazine?

There seems to be something of a glut of new projects recently relying on the efforts of "volunteers" to get off the ground. Perhaps they should go away and come back when they've either decided to be a community enterprise like the Salford Star or found the money to pay ALL contributors.

On companies house Chimp Publications (2008) Ltd registered in Liverpool is a private limited company with no share capital. So sounds like a not for profit.

Whereas Chimp Publications Ltd of the same Liverpool address is a normal limited company and is dormant.

Just becasue they're a limited company with no share capital desn't mean they're 'not for profit'. It just suggests the owners have seen fit not to put any money into it. Speaks volumes really ;-)

Would you want them to owe you money?

You are right that the lack of share capital is no gaurantee that it is not for profit. However, it is a common way for associations to work as limited companies.

I don't think it says anything about the financial set up. After all you could start a company with 100 shares at 1 pence each and it would be no better off than this one.
