The 18th North West Newspaper Awards were announced on Friday, providing several embattled publishers with a welcome (albeit temporary) respite from what has been a difficult year for the regional industry.
 Big winners The CN Group emerged as the clear winner in terms of accolades accrued, with its titles and journalists hoovering up half the prizes on offer, including weekly newspaper of the year for the Cumberland News and best title with a circulation of under 20,000 for Barrow's North West Evening Mail.Blackpool's Gazette won the coveted gong of daily newspaper of the year, while the daily newspaper website of the year went to the Lancashire Evening Post. Manchester's Crains collected the prize for weekly newspaper website of the year. The Manchester Evening News, which featured heavily in the nominations for the awards, went home empty handed.
