At the Regional Press Awards 2007 ceremony in London on Friday, there were three North West winners while a further four were ‘highly commended’. All three regional winners came from the CN stable. The Cumberland News was the only title at the awards with an interest in two winning categories.

The three regional winners were John Colman of the Cumberland News, Anne Pickles of Cumbrian Newspapers and the Cumberland News.

Pickles, associate editor at Cumbrian Newspapers, has won several awards before, twice in the Regional Press Awards when at the Yorkshire Evening Post and prior to that was Press Gazette UK feature writer of the year.

Neil Hodgkinson, editorial director of Cumbrian newspapers, is clearly building a successful team at the family owned company.

Two other regional journalists picked up ‘highly commended’ nominations, both from the Liverpoool Echo - Adrian Butler and Christopher Bascombe, while the Lancashire Evening Post and the MEN were highly commended respectively in the under 40,000 and over 40,000 circulation daily paper categories.

The MEN is currently enjoying one of its most successful periods for several years in terms of awards and nominations with its web site recently being voted newspaper web site of the year ahead of the Guardian and the Times.
