Salford Council is to increase the frequency and size of its magazine LIFE IN Salford, which goes out free to all the city’s residents and soon business premises.
It’s a decision which hasn’t gone down well with all the political parties.
One Tory council blogger says he’s “appalled” because "residents are paying for too much already for the Council’s marketing department." How-Do put this criticism to the council and asked whether this was essentially going to be a one-sided view about how great the council was... "(LIFE) is legally obliged to be completely politically neutral. It is produced to keep residents informed and updated about council services," said council leader Cllr John Merry. "The aim is to make it an even better way of keeping householders in touch with their council." LIFE is produced in-house by the council’s marketing and communications team and it currently costs £55k every year to produce 6 16-page editions. We’re told that 12 editions of 24 pages would cost £174k. "While it will cost more to do this, I have set the magazine a revenue target for advertising each month to help offset this increase," continued Merry. "In addition, we can advertise in LIFE ourselves, saving us the cost of advertising elsewhere or in producing some leaflets. "For example, local recruitment advertising currently placed in newspapers can be carried instead in LIFE. As well as saving money, this will give residents improved access to job opportunities. "I am confident this new approach will not cost tax payers any more money." Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
