A new online platform has been launched to bring together freelance copywriters with agencies and publishers on the lookout for "budget written content."

A new online platform has been launched to bring together freelance copywriters with agencies and publishers on the lookout for "budget written content."
Copy cats get online
Copify.com is the brainchild of ex-Rippleffect copywriter Martin Harrison and Rob McVey, until recently the lead developer at NuBlue.

The two are working out of Lancaster University's InfoLab 21 facility, alongside McVey's new agency MJR Web, and aim to establish Copify.com as the online marketplace where producers and seekers of content can meet and strike up relationships.

Harrison said of the concept: "Copify offers a great opportunity, not just for marketing agencies to source content, but also for talented writers to earn money and gain valuable experience.”

The site offers services starting from 3p per word.

SEO firm Latitude has been brought on-board as one of the business' first customers.

3p per word?
What happened to *day rates*?

Creatives! Your next killer tagline is now officially worth approximately 25p.

Good luck paying the mortgage :(

Exactly.

A tagline like:
Think Different

Would be worth 6p. Utterly ridiculous.

Cheers Andy.

Daniel, the site isn't really intended for those looking to source ad copy. More for those who need text for web pages etc.

Talk is cheap, copy, evidently is cheaper...

This commodity model for copy just drains the respect away from copywriting.

Bring on lifeless copy and uninspiring messages for the web, just what's needed to stand out, more fodder.

I know, you could call it istockcopy.com? Just a thought.

Personally I'd rather keep copywriting where it belongs, in creative services, not 'off the shelf' purchased by the wheelbarrow load. And that's all copy, not just ad copy. The web should be full of considered content else it will turn grey.

(Just my £2.64p worth)

I've come across similar agencies for PR, where writers are paid a pittance per release. It's shameful to value a good writer's work so low. Not only that, but you'll only attract writers who can't find work elsewhere, or students with very little experience - so the quality has to be suspect.

Martin is a very good writer and I have worked with him before I hope they do very well. Good content is worth paying for but then a lot of people charge a high rate for re writing duplicate content or very general copy, depending on the content there should be a different rate I'm sure Martin and the team will have a similar pricing struvture

I'm sure that Martin is a great writer. That's not the point - it's the writers he is employing that I'm worried about. Presumably he won't be doing much of the writing himself! The concern really is for the industry, when people are willing to work for next to nothing. You either get bad writers trying to earn money where they can, or good writers who are missing out on better opportunities. This could give them a bad experience. Also, it generally devalues the work of decent writers. I get paid decent rates - and never do a rehash job as described. It's all original. And a lot of skill, integrity and creative energy goes into every project.

Carol,
Plenty of copywriters have echoed your concerns, but then you're not exactly impartial are you? You can follow the latest on this on our blog. http://blog.copify.com/

There's an old familiar phrase that springs to mind here, if only I could remember it...oh yes, here it is: Pay peanuts. Get monkeys.

Hope you've stocked up on the bananas guys.
