Crain’s confirms launch of Manchester edition
Major US publisher Crain Communications Inc has confirmed it is to launch a weekly business newspaper for Greater Manchester in the autumn. How-Do broke the news in May as a rumour but withheld information about the publisher.

It is an unusual development for the substantial privately owned US company which publishes 29 titles across the US and internationally. It currently publishes just four Crain’s city business papers: Detroit, Chicago, New York and Cleveland.

Specific details of proposed circulation and launch dates have not yet been released but the company stresses its plans devote equal attention to print and digital.

The company is currently looking for a number of staff including an editor, journalists, a head of research, marketing and sales positions.

The publisher is Arthur Porter, well-known to many in the region’s advertising community, who has returned to the UK from Florida to run the new venture for Crain’s.

News of the announcement follows news last week that Time Out Manchester appears to be back on track while Network Rail is close to announcing its preferred choice of company to publish its proposed new daily Manchester commuter title.

Graeme Wood, managing director of ad agency AWA said: “This news is surprising and it will be fascinating to see how it develops. Make no mistake, it’s a real coup for Manchester.”

Crain Comms Inc said that: “Crain’s Manchester Business, a new local weekly business newspaper, will be modeled on the established and successful model found throughout America.

“Crain’s Manchester Business will bring breaking local business news to the Greater Manchester area for c-level executives, senior management, and small business owners.”

It is believed that the Manchester publication will be the test bed for further city launches in the UK.

Assuming this turns out to be true...it's surprising but excellent news for the region.

The MEN, DPost, Insider et al will have their work cut to compete. Hopefully, standards will be raised across the board but...my guess is that the others will remain as they are and Crains will quickly establish itself as the business must read.

IMHO of course.
