Crain’s gets back-slapping treatment from MIDAS after one year in Manchester | Print |  Email to a friend
Monday, 03 November 2008
Supporters of Crain’s Manchester Business would argue that the publication has made a major impact since its launch in the city at the tail end of last year – there can be no doubt that it’s certainly been the cause of ripples, ructions and ramifications in the once (relatively) sedate business publishing market here.

Although it still seems like the ‘new kid on the block’ to many in the city, the paper has actually had its office doors open for a year now.

This obviously seemed like a good opportunity for MIDAS, the inward investment and development agency, to release a statement (on Friday) celebrating “a successful first year” for the paper.

Crain's: getting the MIDAS touch
The statement says it all really, so we’ll leave you in MIDAS’ capable hands:

Having identified Manchester as the UK’s second city for business and media and a leading European destination for investment Crain’s opened its offices in City Towers last October.

This decision has seen Crain’s secure impressive first year subscription figures across key business sectors including Manchester’s world-class professional and financial services sector.

Congratulating Crain’s on their success, Colin Sinclair, Chief Executive of MIDAS said: “Having being operating successfully in cities across the United States for almost a century, we at MIDAS are delighted that Crain’s chose to start its entry into the international media market in Manchester.

“Crain’s provides Manchester with a unique service which is invaluable to all its dedicated readers online and in print. Business is the heartbeat of this city, from small local businesses to leading global corporations, and all benefit from the high-quality reporting Crain’s provides.”

Arthur Porter, Publisher of Crain’s said: “In our first year we have built a publication and a team which delivers breaking news and expert analysis which is proving to be a formula for success.

“Our team of 13 dedicated business journalists covering the region can take great pride in consistently delivering high-quality reporting, helping to inform the local business community and shape the news agenda of the day.

“Looking to the future we hope to build on this success both locally and across the UK and Europe”.

(Don’t recall anyone issuing a press release for How-Do on our first birthday! Ed)

Congrats to Crains, but MIDAS have a nerve.

Where was the support for home grown Manchester publishers before? As How-Do says where were our birthday cards?

True to its name MIDAS is attracted to everying that glitters, but all that glitters is not gold.

The real gems in Manchester are the decent publishers that have prospered in inspite of the complete lack of interest from MIDAS, just because MIDAS can not tick a box to say that they have 'attracted' an overseas company with all the cash they spend on the taxpayers behalf.

The sad truth is MIDAS are just not interested in home-grown publishers because they don't get to bask in thier glory. No doubt MIDAS will be putting the Crains move to Manchester as another feather in thier cap.
