Monday, 27 October 2008
The International Building Press has unveiled the winners of its Annual Regional Journalism Awards, with some familiar names rising to the top of the pile.

The awards were conceived in 2005 to celebrate the talents of journalists writing about the region’s built environments – covering topics such as design, construction and regeneration.

How-Do's own lists remind me of something else....what is it?....oh yes, Jaspan (how-Do's boss) launched Business Insider which I believe was itself styled on Crain's US business format of lists and more lists. Talking of Insider, I came across the latest issue this week – gobsmacked I was. Its lead feaure, its annual top 100 business folk, used to cover 20 odd pages and have pen portraits of 70 to 100 words. Check it out – four pages this year and as for the portraits – I quote directly “(Number) 90. Rick Kennerly, Yorkshire Bank – they're still lending. 91. Keith Alderson, Co-op Bank. ..and so is the Co-op”. Unblievable – page 31 just in case anyone doesn't believe me. If I were one of those listed, I'd be tempted to ring Insider and advise them to f**k off and never bother me again. I'd also love to be a fly on the wall of the sponsors Abbey or Hill Dickenson. And as for the rest of the issue – page after page of sponsored features of men in suits. Crains must be delighted with the state of Insider – they must be thinking all their Xmas' have come in one. Having said that, and I do genuinely hope Crains stays the course.....I believe there may be some squeaky bums in Crains Towers. The ed in chief, Christopher (of said family Crains) having been a regular visitor to sunny Mcr last year hasn't been seen in months much to the consternation of the 20 odd staff there I'm told. He's also been given added responsibilites back in Chicago. And meanwhile the (profitable) weekly print titles in the States are being scaled back this summer and in some cases will only be available online I hear...how that leaves a heavily loss-making peripheral weekly print title, god only knows. But as I said, the region sorely needs Crains – it's the only source of independent and challenging biz journalism in the N/W. But guys...and we're back to where we started - shape up your lists. But that;s what you get I guess if you employ an academic as your research manager.

Insider currently survives through the revenue it generates from its award dinners and increasingly advertorial nature...MEN cynic - you ommitted to mention the portrait of Steven Broomhead in Insider's 100 feature - it talked about the high standing the NWDA is held in. What tosh. Now although I'm the first to admit that this is totally unconnected to the fact that Insider receives substantial commercial support from the NWDA for various ventures, I should point out that Crain's is the only business publication which is not afraid to speak the truth about these quangos. And while we're discusisng the region's biz publcations, EN slid out of the leading pack years ago while the MEN and Daily Post business sections still command surprisingly and encouragingly strong and loyal commercial support. Crain's has hardly scratched the 'awards' surface'...yet!
