Crain's gets on board with Virgin for first class readership | Print |  Email to a friend

Weekly business title Crain's Manchester Business has revealed an interesting new strategy, with a move to circulate the paper to first class travellers on Virgin Trains.

From next Monday, 30 June, the US-owned title will be handed out personally by Crain's staff – which apparently is set to include publisher Arthur Porter – to all first class travellers on the operator's Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston service.

This new weekly distribution route will be supplemented by a move to place additional copies of Crain's in Virgin's First Class Lounge at the station – thus ensuring that the paper's reach goes beyond the Monday morning Euston-bound traveller.

The development marks another evolution in the city's fast moving business press sector, which last week saw Insider matching Crain's by moving to create daily email news alerts.

How-Do attempted to contact Porter to find out more about the agreement with Virgin, but he could not be reached at the time of writing.

However, Crain's did release a statement about the move into Virgin territory, in which Porter was quoted as saying: "We are delighted to be associated with a company such as Virgin Trains.

"It is powerful testimony to the quality editorial the Manchester business community has come to expect every week from Crain’s. It makes travelling first class on Virgin an even more attractive proposition."

Crain's has been published in the city since December last year, basing its business model on the firm's successful sister papers in the US.

Given the continuing chaos on the West Coast line with frequent breakdowns in the west midlands, is this the time time to link up with Beardy Branson. The definition of a Virgin Train is that it doesn't go all the way.

Exactly what Virgin first class has been crying out for - A Porter to deliver our papers. Will he help with the bags too though?

I think this is an excellent business move for Crains. It certainly seems that Crains is having an impact on the region and everybody I speak to that has read the publication has nothing but high praises for the quality and quickly buy into the editorial content. I speak to a great deal of professionals that receive a number of different publications through their doors every week and the word on the street is that they definitely read Crains. Im sure it will be well received on Virgin Trains by the business travellors and can only strengthen their awareness and subscriptions. Well Done.
