The Cumberland News was joined in the winners enclosure by the MEN and Liverpool Post and Echo at this year’s Regional Press Awards, as North West papers succeeded in collecting numerous gongs.
Within How-Do’s stomping ground the night unarguably belonged to the News, which collected one of the most coveted awards of the scheme with the ‘best weekly newspaper’ prize. Judges commended the title as an "unashamedly old-fashioned but sturdy piece of journalism” awarding it in the ‘circulation over 20,000’ category. The CN also won through on two of the individual staffer prizes, with Roger Lytollis securing the title of feature writer of the year, while sports writer of the year went to Jon Colman for the second year on the trot. Other winners included the Manchester Evening News, which collected the supplement of the year award for its Munich Remembered piece and the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo, with Colin Lane scooping the photographer of the year title. In other news, CN chief executive Robin Burgess has an extra reason to celebrate this week, after finding out that he has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Burgess will receive the honour later this year in recognition of his services to the newspaper industry. Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
