The Cumbrian News Group has launched 15 “hyperlocal” websites as it "puts its roots down" in the community.
They will also have a number of village correspondents and groups that can upload material directly onto the sites.
Turner "We’re giving people open access, so for example, a theatre group can add information about performances," explained Nick Turner, CN Group’s head of digital content development.
At the moment, the websites cover the larger towns and communities, and providing it is successful, more will be developed. "It allows us to go down a further level, to the allotments, where news is specific just to that community. "Yes, there may be some snippets for the main site and the newspaper, but this is a chance to show what’s on and bring the community closer together." When asked about the legal issues associated with allowing citizen journalists to upload their stories, How-Do was told that there would be "a champion for each site" to oversee them editorially.
The publisher is also looking into a Polish language site. Following meetings in Maryport with public agencies, it was suggested that they should appeal to the 400-strong Polish community. Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
