The daily number of free copies of the Daily Post in Liverpool has risen marginally to 6224 for the quarter ended 1 April 2007, according to figures from the ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulation). It is the first time the paper’s free distribution has been audited by the ABC.
Trinity launched its free initiative in April last year with an initial trial of 6,000 copies a day given away at certain distribution points in the city centre.
The last ABC figure for Post paid for sales relates to December 2006 which was 17,103. Trinity’s business development director, Mark Dickinson, told How-Do recently that the company’s objective was to keep overall circulation around 23,000 – however that mix of paid and free was ultimately derived.
Across in Manchester, the number of free copies of the MEN that are distributed every day has risen by just over 4% to 89, 349 in May according to ABC.
The last ABC figures for paid for sales of the paper were 94,018 for the six months to December 2006.
Most media observers believe the next set of figures will show a further sharp fall in paid for sales but Elaine Darbyshire, director of corporate communications at MEN Media, told How-Do earlier this year that she expected paid for circulation to remain around 90,000 copies a day in the coming months.
