Wallasey born Pugh started his journalistic career as a reporter on the Birkenhead News.
In 1969 he was appointed editor of the Daily Post and held that position for eight years before moving across to edit its sister title, the Echo, for a further five years.
He retired in 1982 but remained active in the communications industry in Liverpool undertaking consultancy projects.
