The previous editor, Jenny Campbell, had been in situ for eight years and is now planning to retire in France once the hand over and other matters are finalised.

Attewell has been freelancing since relocating from London to Hawarden in north Wales six years ago. She was already a contributor to Candis as she was responsible for the “He said she said” feature in the magazine.

Other titles she has been freelancing for include the Express, Guardian, Bliss, Essentials, Eve and the Sunday People.

She began her career at Company magazine as a junior features writer before becoming a features editor at both Essentials and B magazines.

She has also been acting editor for 19, covering until a replacement editor was found.

Attewell is a qualified Relate counsellor and is a regular speaker on teenagers, sex and contraception at conferences in the UK.

She left London for family reasons she added, citing schooling in Lambeth, where she lived, as a major issue.

Founded in 1962, subscription only Candis sells in excess of 300,000 copies a month (ABC audited) and a key USP is that it donates 10% of its subscription income to national health related charities. Last September, Candis achieved a milestone of raising £50m in donations to charities since it was founded.

Newhall employs 160 staff.

Attewell said:  “I’m thrilled to be joining Candis at this exciting time.

“Already a well loved and respected magazine, I’m looking forward to working with the team I’m inheriting to take this successful brand to new heights.  It’s also important to me that Candis is a magazine that gives back – in this age of shiny over consumerism, who wouldn’t want to work for a publication that donates significant amounts to health charities and community causes?”

New Hall retained a headhunter to help fill the position which carried a published salary of c£60k.
