Andrew Fickling and Nicola Shindler appeared in the Sunday Times over the weekend, having qualified for the paper’s elite ’40 under 40’ for the media industry.
The two appeared to be lone voices for the region in a list dominated by rising industry stars that are predominantly based out of London. Shindler Sport Media Group chief exec Fickling, as regular How-Do readers will be aware, has been the driving force in moving the Sport newspapers away from their traditionally seedy reputation into more light-hearted, ‘laddish’ titles. This move, designed to make the titles more acceptable to mainstream advertisers, has seen the Huddersfield-born, Brunel University alumni take on James Brown as a consultant and Zoo founder Barry McIlheney as editor in chief. Fickling is 35 years old. At 39 Shindler only just squeezed into the list, but would have undoubtedly been one of the first names the judges conjured up in the realm of TV production. The Red founder, a former scriptwriter for Cracker, runs, according to the paper “perhaps the best independent television producer that has not sold out to the big boys.” Her company is responsible for hits such as Clocking Off, Queer as Folk and Mark of Cain and is arguably the best known of the handful of major production houses based outside the ‘big smoke’. Both Shindler and Fickling appeared in How-Do’s media 100. Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
