Future of The Darrener uncertain after owner banned from Darwen FC | Print |  Email to a friend

The future of the paid-for weekly Darwen newspaper, The Darrener, appears uncertain following the banning of its owner Ted Ward from Darwen FC’s football ground at which the paper’s offices are based.
The future of the paid-for weekly Darwen newspaper, The Darrener, appears uncertain following the banning of its owner Ted Ward from Darwen FC’s football ground at which the paper’s offices are based.

The paper, which launched last October, claimed to be in expansionary mood recently with a planned increase in pagination and the imminent launch of a website.

The problems with the paper have arisen as a result of an injunction banning Ward from entering Darwen FC’s ground. Ward had bought the club in January 2007 from previous owner Kevin Henry but Henry claims to have only received a portion of the agreed sale proceeds.

The paper’s phone lines were dead when How-Do attempted to call the editor Peter Holland for clarification.

After the hearing in Birmingham last week, Ward told bystanders that as far as he was concerned it was “only the end of round one.”

The weekly paper cost 65p and Holland told How-Do that the title was selling almost 3,000 copies a week with readership of over 7,000. His ambition he said is to see paid-for sales at 7,000 within 12 months.

In addition to former BBC reporter Holland, there are two full time journalists, one graphic designer, two part time production staff and the paper’s ad sales director.

For "darreners" who might miss reading about local news may be interested in Darwen Online (www.darwenonline.co.uk). A free local website that I found when searching for news on The Darrener Newspaper.

This is not surprising given Ted Ward's history of non-payment of services.

After a five month battle involving a debt collection agency, I finally got paid!

Finding, researching and producing stories is hard enough without being ripped off by a couple of "Johnny- come- lately's".

They have now lost any shred of creditability they may have had in the town and quite rightly so.

As the Chinese philosopher said: "If you wait long enough by the side of the River Darwen the body of your enemy will float past."

It's nice to see the BBC get some things right.
In off loading 'Dutch' Holland for reasons yet unexplained, they gave him a golden opportunity to show his true potential and ability to steer a newlocal newspaper to a rip roaring success. I look forward to celebrating the first anniversary of the Darrener. Or am I missing something fundamental....like it might not happen!
PS George....Chinese Philosphers very rarely get it wrong!
