The management and chapels at CN’s Carlisle and Barrow newspapers have reached a settlement after what had become an acrimonious affair complete with wide spread industrial action.
The dispute was exacerbated in the union’s view by the management’s decision to close the final salary scheme without consultation.
The deal which has been struck is for a new 27 month pay deal starting in October this year which will be based on August’s RPI rate plus either 0.75% or 1% on top and in year two RPI plus either 0.25% or 0.5%. The Carlisle chapel has voted for 1% this year and 0.25% next year. Barrow has yet to decide.
In addition and in recognition of what are universally agreed to be poor salaries at Barrow, all journalists will receive increases on their basic salary of between £100 and £1270 pa. It is believed that the majority of the newsroom will receive increases of £500 or more.
The final part of the deal relates to starting salaries for qualified journalists at both Barrow and Carlisle where the basic rates will rise from £16,000 to £18,000 and £18,000 to £19,000 respectively.
Chris Morley of the NUJ in Manchester is optimistic that Whitehaven, the remaining chapel will also soon reach agreement.
