In the second of 14 reviews of the awards on offer at the recent How-Do Awards, the second category up was daily newspaper of the year.
The market for daily papers in the North West is somewhat more limited than most of the other sectors on offer at the How-Do Awards given that there are only a handful of regional titles in the North West. However, strong entries from three of the region’s biggest dailies provided the judges with more than sufficient merit for inclusion on the shortlist.
The three shortlisted entries in the category were the Lancashire Evening Post, the Liverpool Daily Post and the Manchester Evening News.
The winner proved to be the Manchester Evening News.
All submitted material from the newspapers related to their activities in 2007.
The judges’ comments follow. The next award category review will be design consultancy of the year.
Lancashire Evening Post
Against a backdrop of declining – paid-for - circulation among regional newspapers, the LEP, which was the first regional paper to integrate its newsroom, continued with its ‘on and offline evolution’. Paper sales declined by circa 10% while unique visitors rose by over 90% over the year. Regional and national news pages were redesigned and a host of other new in-paper features were launched.
Daily Post
Increased the number of free copies made available to 7,000 a day which has resulted in readership growth of 55% with the bulk of the growth derived from younger males. Invested in several areas of the paper including the business team prior to new developments for launch this year. Generated several exclusives surrounding LFC’s takeover, the implosion of the council’s Lib Dem leadership, The Mathew Street Festival ‘fiasco’ and Rhys Jones.
Manchester Evening News
The year saw further development of the part free/part paid concept as the number of free copies made available resulted in the paper once again reclaiming its title as the ‘biggest’ regional daily paper. ‘The relocation of Channel M together with new links to radio stations (and group stable mates) Smooth and Century has resulted in arguably the most convergent regional newsroom in the country.
