How-Do Media 100 | Print |  Email to a friend

The eight judges for the inaugural How-Do Media 100 have now concluded their voting and the results will be published very shortly.
The eight judges for the inaugural How-Do Media 100 have now concluded their voting and the results will be published very shortly.

Over 400 nominations were received and the judges have met to whittle down a short list of approximately 140 people to the 100 required. The compilation of the list of the North West’s most influential and powerful media and creative folk has proved entertaining and informative for all concerned.

The Guardian newspaper published its seventh annual ranking of the UK’s most powerful media folk in July and the North West had just three representatives in a list which was headed up by Google’s chief executive Eric Schmidt and Rupert Murdoch.

The judges and How-Do believe North West media folk will find a much greater resonance with this compilation.

As ever with such rankings and compilations, which are neither an art nor a science, there will undoubtedly be much debate together with equal amounts of delight, irritation and pained ego. But the strength, clout and variety of the rankings will surprise most people –within and without the region.

A full list of criteria, definitions and explanations will accompany the publication of the Media 100 but suffice it to say, in addition to obvious criteria such as employment and position, the judges also took note of off-beat factors such as if the person concerned has left a message – how quickly would you respond? Levity aside, it’s surprising how such a basic technique helped clarify many situations!

Broadcasters, producers, writers, ad agents, publishers, editors, managing directors, presenters and PRs – the judges found the process a challenge, such is the abundance of regional talent

No doubt we will have excluded a number of notable names…but in the process we have created the definitive list of key figures in the North West media and creative industry, a sector which employs 130,000 people in the region and, encouragingly, is thriving without (because of?) much public sector support.

For the record, the judges are:

Jim Hancock, political commentator, broadcaster and media pundit

Martin Brooks, former senior BBC staffer and manager of the mediacity project

Lindsay MacFarlaine, head of corporate communications at Lancashire County Council

Mike Williams, widely acknowledged as the most successful ever media buyer based outside London

Arabella McIntyre-Brown, book publisher and former editor of EN and Finance North magazines

Dave Carter, head of Manchester Digital Development Agency and a leading regional digital advocate

Keith Sutton, award winning regional newspaper editor whose titles have twice won regional newspaper of the year

Charlotte Thompson, youngest ever managing partner at McCanns and currently on garden leave prior to joining a new agency.

The How-Do Media 100 is co-sponsored by EYE Corp, an international out-of-home media-owner which manages five European airport advertising concessions including Manchester and Turner Parkinson, a leading regional law firm with a growing reputation for its dedicated creative industries team, advising a wide range of innovators, artists, software houses, publishers and marketing agencies.
