Friday's Regional Press Awards showered kudos on a small band of individuals (and one local title) from the currently embattled newspaper industry here in the North West of England.

In an event that was overshadowed somewhat by the currently parlous state of the sector, Nicola Dowling, Roger Lytollis, Jon Colman (pictured above), Tim Bradley and the CN Group's News & Star at least had something to smile about.

A good day for CN
Manchester Evening News journalist Dowling, the intrepid reporter that broke news of Cristiano Ronaldo's not so silky footwork to the world, picked up the award for multimedia journalist of the year, while Lytollis, of the Cumberland News, secured the prize for feature writer of the year for the second year running.

His repeat performance was eclipsed in the best possible fashion by the multi-garlanded Jon Colman from the CN Group, who secured the gongs for sports journalist of the year for both weekly and daily/Sunday publications.

The judges described him as "an exceptional talent".

One of Colman's papers - The News & Star - also triumphed at the event, which was held at the Marriott Grosvenor Square in London, by taking home the 'newspaper of the year (daily/Sunday) - below 40,000 circulation' award. Suitably impressed judges remarked that the paper boasted "page after page of compelling reads.”

The region's haul was rounded off by Tim Bradley who was hailed as the photographer of the year (weekly) for his work for the Rochdale Observer and Heywood Advertiser

So Nicola Dowling wins a coveted national award, bring much needed good news to the MEN, and they are [edit: making her redundant]!
How can a journalist of obvious talent and a pleasant disposition fail the MEN's skills matrix.
It's a mad world.

Good to see the multimedia journalist award going to someone in the North West, even if the MEN don't seem to think Nicola is worth keeping hold of.

Hopefully Nicola has chosen to take the money and jump ship and take her talents back to the nationals. If she hasn't then the MEN Media has truly lost its way.

Nicola Dowling is in the top two in terms of the best journalists at the MEN. She wins a multimedia award - then gets shafted by the management on the pretext of not having enough multimedia skills. Truly moronic management. She's best of out of it, with decision makers like that no wonder the paper's on its arse.
