The quarterly title, founded by Stephen Kingston and Steven Speed and targeting readers in east Salford, has just published its spring 2007 edition.
During its first year, the publication has been long listed for the Paul Foot Award, won the Salford Lotta Bottle Award and the UnLtd Millennium Award.
The magazine is free and Kingston claims 16000 copies are printed each issue with 12000 delivered to homes in east Salford, with the balance distributed through bookies, pubs, launderettes, community centres, libraries and newsagents.
The publication received public funding to help it get going. The funders included Awards For All and East Salford Community Committee. Revenue is generated by advertising, donations, subscriptions and t-shirt sales.
This summer, Salford Star plans to start diversifying its activities by launching some projects involving local children. Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
