Lancashire Evening Telegraph on eBay... and in Hyndburn | Print |  Email to a friend
Friday, 06 November 2009

Isn't it usually newspapers that pay their staff? Common practice we thought.

However, in a daring new initiative that might be set to revolutionise the world of publishing recruitment, the Lancashire Telegraph appears to be asking for a new reporter to actually pay for the opportunity to "find the stories, meet the people and be part of the race to meet deadlines."

Isn't it usually newspapers that pay their staff? Common practice we thought.
Worth paying for
We kid you not.

Well, not much anyway.

A little Friday afternoon cyber-surfing here at How-Do HQ led to the discovery of this rather interesting eBay page.

In the auction, courtesy of the Thwaites Empire Theatre in Blackburn, bidders can fight it out for the chance to -

"Spend the day as a Newspaper Reporter with the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.
Be part of the day's breaking news stories as they happen by spending a day as a journalist!
Find the stories, meet the people and be part of the race to meet deadlines!!!"

It all makes the world of regional newspaper reporting sound impossibly glamorous, doesn't it? And to think, some staff in the industry actually want the papers to PAY THEM. Unbelievable.

Joshing aside, the auction is actually all in a very good cause - to help the theatre celebrate its centenary year and raise £100,000 to replace its roof structure.

In a bid to do this it has asked its corporate sponsors for 100 special gifts to auction off, with Newsquest's being the journo job.

The place to be
It's early days for the lot, so the theatre (and the Telegraph) will no doubt be hoping for slightly more than the current 99p starting price.

The lot for 100 Holland's Pies seems to be attracting a lot more interest.

In other (real) news at the title, the Telegraph is set to launch a daily news page to service the Hyndburn area of its patch.

Debuting on Monday the page will join other districts such as Darwen, Pendle and Rossendale in boasting a dedicated slot to cover and promote the goings on in the local community.

The district is also covered by GMG-owned title the Accrington Observer, which moved its editorial office from the town into Manchester as part of the recent cost saving exercises at the firm.

Hang on a minute - didn't the LT, back when it was the LET, used to have a whole edition dedicated to Accrington? I seem to think it had something called a 'district office' there as well, until it was replaced by a mailbox. Every credit to them for trying to take advantage of GMWN's idiocy, but this is half-hearted at best.

Some folk reckon there'll be a few more newspapers for sale on ebay before too long.

This ended with not one bid and therefore a failure to meet the 99p reserve. Big contribution to the fund guys!
