The Lancashire Telegraph has launched a new service which offers free text breaking news alerts to readers in an initiative which the paper believes is the first of its kind in the UK.
The team at the paper said there are numerous services from newspapers currently available in the UK but all are commercially-driven. Only in the States has the team identified papers which offer free to receive texts for readers.
It is their belief that added value is gained by further engaging with readers and highlighting content in the paper and on the web.
The new service was launched last Wednesday. It is the first part of a trial which the paper’s and Newsquest’s broader management are closely following.
Several hundred subscribers signed up on the first three days.
Subscribers to the service need to sign up by text (which will cost a standard text charge from their service provider) but thereafter all the texts are free to receive. The cost to Newsquest per alert is understood to be minimal – whether just one or several thousand emails are issued.
Initially there are 10 different services on offer: seven related to specific localities – Blackburn, Burnley, Darwen, Hyndburn, Pendle, Ribble Valley and Rossendale - and three related to football clubs: Blackburn, Burnley and Accrington.
Young In the medium term there are plans to roll out further services including gigs, travel, competitions and free offers.Editor Kevin Young said: "We are always looking for new ways to keep our readers informed about what is happening in and around East Lancashire.
"Our new text service means we can get the latest stories out to readers at the press of a button and this latest step forward follows the exciting improvements we've made to our website in recent months."
