The three most senior people in the Guardian’s northern sales operation are being made redundant and the entire telesales operation is to be transferred to London.
The Guardian stresses that the structural changes are being driven by a desire to enhance efficiency and delivery rather than cost cutting. The objective is to centralise the bulk of its recruitment sales – Guardian Recruitment Solutions (GRS) - in London. The three people being made redundant are Ann Waterson, Tony Bowley and Paul Islam.
Waterson was head of the Guardian’s sales in the north. Bowley and Islam respectively headed up GRS and display and both reported in to Waterson. How-Do understands that 18 telesales positions are being discussed. Those concerned are being offered the opportunity to relocate to London should they wish. A consultation period period is underway with all parties. In a related development, the number of field sales position in the GRS division will be increased by five to seven salespeople. The Guardian’s sales director - Chris Pelekanou – and some of his team members in London have been ringing round North West agencies informing them of the changes and reiterating the increased investment in field sales reps managing agency relationships. One agency buyer told How-Do that "Although it was regrettable that jobs had to go in Manchester, it made sense to consolidate the bulk of its GRS operation into a single selling location and that buyers and others would probably be less concerned about where the telesales teams were based. "But increasing the number of field sales reps would be well received by regional agencies." Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
