MEN circulation expected to stay constant in latest ABCs | Print |  Email to a friend

MEN circulation expected to stay constant in latest ABCs
MEN Media is forecasting that the latest six monthly ABC figures to be published in August will show the paper’s total circulation remaining constant at around 180,000 with paid for sales falling by just 6,000 since last December.

If this proves to be the case, it will underline a remarkably resilient performance by the title in the face of most pundits believing the free copies initiative had hastened a dramatic fall off in paid for sales.

The last ABC figures for sales of the paper were 94,018 for the six months to December 2006. MEN Media’s house forecast is for a figure of around 88,000 for the six months to June this year.

The number of free copies picked up rose to 92,867 a day in June according to ABC stats.

Mark Dodson, chief executive of GMG Regional Media

The combined figure would mean the paper remains the UK’s largest regional daily newspaper.

Mark Dodson, chief executive of GMG Regional Media said:”We are pleased our circulation is continuing to increase in what remain challenging times for the industry. The increasing circulation figure and strengthened readership profile are great news for our advertisers. By listening to our advertisers and readers, we have been brave enough to change the way we provide news in the Greater Manchester area.”

Well done to the MEN. The decision to go free in central Manchester was brave and strategically very sound. Despite the industry cynics, there has been no decline in the quality of the product and advertisers are being guaranteed a consistent audience.
How long before the evenings in Liverpool, Birmingham, Newcastle et al adopt a similar approach?

If Mike McCormack, thinks it's a good idea then run like fuck. Strategic advice from this man is the equivalent of advising the regional press to run an advertising campaign emphasising its value as cat litter. Hang on a minute, he did just that.
He was also the idiot who fronted the Fresh Awards (100 % nicked from the Cream Awards) and reduced them from 8 events to a series of "road shows" and one Grand Prix. Jesus Wept Mike. When will you realise that your poor man Ray Sale impressions impressed no-one ever and that you are the key factor to the obvious failure of Fresh?
Don't ever imagine your credibility is such that you can comment on anything. Ever.

Let me see, 6,000 sales lost in six months equals 1,000 sales lost per month. If this carries on at the same rate, how long will it be before MEN's paid for sale is zero?
Answer: 7 years and 4 months.
Brave? One way of putting it.

So then, how many MENs are dumped on the streets, unread and unwanted? These ABC figures are a joke, and everyone knows it.

Newspapers are dead in the water ... too busy to nitice that in heading towards the great new media horizon with podcasting, internet, interactive whatnots, texting, citizen journalism (sorry, free crap journalism and pictures and video mainly) they virtually ignore their core market which is community journalism ... local born reporters on the streets, sniffing out stories with local born photographers, integrating with the community and showing respect.
It's always more interesting to find out what happened next door last night with the police there and if Mrs Soandso round the corner's pekinese really had 8 pups last night.
Too many journalists nowadays put a new nose and tail on spoon-fed press releases from companies and councils and call themselves journalists .... it's all beneath them and vast corporate media companies who want everything for nothing and New Media and interactivity is the new holy grail ... Unfortunately, it's all just bollocks .....
