MEN loses business editor as Barry moves to TheBusinessDesk.com | Print |  Email to a friend

The rapidly evolving business publishing market in Manchester last night experienced yet another seismic shift, as the Manchester Evening News lost its business editor Chris Barry to the recently launched North West edition of TheBusinessDesk.

Manchester’s business scene has undergone myriad changes over the past year with the coming of Crain’s, the reaction of the established titles, new online channels like NXTBook launching and (very) recently the arrival of the ambitious BusinessDesk.

It now appears like the latter, like Crain’s before it, could be set to emerge as something of a new prime mover on the scene.

Speaking to How-Do yesterday evening, TheBusinessDesk.com founder David Parkin confirmed that he had succeeded in securing the high profile signing of Barry.

“Yes, he handed in his notice today,” he stated, adding; “and now I’ve been told that he’s been put out on gardening leave, which is quite an unusual thing to do with a journalist.”

Barry has been with the MEN for the past decade, moving up to take the mantle of business editor two and a half years ago.

Parkin: ambitious
He is, in the opinion of Parkin, “a top class editor and very well respected journalist” and will now be heading up TheBusinessDesk’s fledgling operation on King Street.

“I said when we launched that this region deserves quality journalism and real investment,” Parkin said, “and I think this shows that we’re prepared to follow through on our promises.

“We took the decision to launch here and show our commitment prior to having the entire team in place, as that demonstrated how serious we are and enabled certain conversations to happen.”

Parkin added that more appointments would soon be following suit, but refused to elaborate on what (and who) they might be.

However, How-Do understands that a commercial manager has already agreed in principle to join the operation, although this has not reached the stage of contractual agreement as of yet.

Barry’s starting date at TheBusinessDesk is also not yet clear, due to the current gardening leave situation, but it is expected be a matter of weeks rather than months.

He himself refused to comment on the story when contacted by How-Do.

Any bets on how long it's going to be before the MEN takes him off their website?

Any bets on how long before this thread descends into the usual sycophantic diatribe about crains.

May be the MEN should start renting out its empty car park spaces to make up the short fall in ad revenues?

Forget Crains, what about The Business desk? It's been solid but pretty uninspiring so far. Be interesting to see if Barry changes that.
And where are they getting all this capital to invest from? Don't they know there's a credit crunch going on?

What's with the 'to read the full story login or register' on BusinessDesk. Should be 'to read the full story look up the press release from the company its about'
Crains doesn't force you to log on or register to read the last two paragraphs of the story. They have made the right choice as web users will get fed up of messing around with usernames etc when the same stories are available elsewhere.
Come on BusinessDesk, feel the fear and let go of your content.

Thanks for the nudge Neil, attending to that right now!

An interesting move and somewhat of a gamble in my opinion.

I can't see it making too much of a difference to the MEN as Kevin Feddy effectively runs the business desk anyway.

At a guess I would say the reason Crain's don't require readers to log in to read news like the BusinessDesk is because it makes easier for them to be creative with their viewing figures! How many people who registered for their service during the original hype still actively use it?

Must admit it's a total puzzler to me how you can make money out of putting a handful of local newspaper-style business stories on a website every day. Someone at thebusinessdesk.com must have deep pockets.

Most publishers are creative with their figures Martin, however, the internet doesn't hide anything. Using Alexa.com you can compare the traffic for every website, including this one. How Do beats both Crains and Business Desk with a very respectable rank of 132,000, just goes to show that specialist content is king.
However, Crains Manchester beats both Business Desk Yorkshire and North West combined. I registered for Business Desk but can't be bothered to log on to finish the stories when I can just use Crains.

I have put a link below to the comparison chart of the three sites below, (grateful if you could allow this through ed) not sure if it will work. If not visit www.alexa.com they also do a good browser toolbar.

Useful link, Loggedoff, although I have to say I think it is probably too soon to compare the two. Crains started up in a much larger region than the businessdesk's Yorkshire launch pad and the latter has only just opened its doors in the NW so I wouldn't say those figures prove anything at this early stage. Will be interesting to see how things change over coming months

Glad the link worked Martin. Fair comment about giving it time. That said, the fact that How Do beats both of them says a lot about content and style.
Its amazing, however, that many advertisers would not know about checking site traffic on Alexa.
Business Desk will have to drop the logon nonsense to survive. As a reader I am fine with giving them my email address to get news but to then have to log on to read the stories, I am sorry but no way.
Just tried to unsubscribe from Business Desk and you even have to logon to do that! Grrrr! Its so wrong.

Have been playing around on TheBusinessDesk.com and if you click the 'Remember me' button you don't need to enter your username details every time you log on.

Thanks Witchcraft, I feel a bit of a ludite, but now I can read the rest of the articles easily so now its just down to who gives the best content.
Its great news that we have proper competition for Crains as Insider's content is below par a the moment, but then it is aimed at commercial property people accountants and lawyers, instead of the people who make the money.

Am I missing something? You only have to register for TheBusinessDesk once, then check 'remember me' and you are logged on every time...Its like most of those sites...
