MEN Media makes editorial director Richard Catlow redundant | Print |  Email to a friend

Richard Catlow, the editorial director of the MEN’s portfolio of weekly newspapers, has been made redundant from the group following 14 years with the firm.
Richard Catlow, the editorial director of the MEN’s portfolio of weekly newspapers, has been made redundant from the group following 14 years with the firm.

MEN Media confirmed the move to How-Do yesterday afternoon via a statement from Elaine Darbyshire, the group communications director.

Darbyshire explained: “Due to the recent re-organisation of the senior editorial management team at MEN Media’s Weekly Newspapers, Richard Catlow will leave the company on Friday 31 October, after 14 years service.

“Stewart Rigby, editorial director, will take full responsibility for the editorial department at MEN Weekly Newspapers and Alan Brown will assume responsibility for newspaper sales.”

In response to queries from How-Do she added that “there are no other editorial redundancies” at the group.

Catlow’s loss is a high profile one for MEN, not just due to his lofty position and the length of his tenure at the firm, but also as he currently holds the position of chairman of the Society of Editors North West.

He was not available to comment directly on the development at the time of writing.

The move follows on from last month’s news that the group is closing five of its regional offices in the North West – offices that deal with some of the MEN’s weekly titles.

A statement from the firm at the time noted: “We remain fully committed to the localities we serve with our weekly titles and these closures will not result in any decrease in the numbers of local journalists we employ nor editorial focus we give to our local markets.”

MEN Media publishes more than 20 weekly newspapers across the Greater Manchester area, including titles such as the Oldham Advertiser, Stockport Times, Tameside Advertiser and Rochdale Observer.

He's been around for an age Catlow, but still a thoroughly good bloke who puts a lot in. Good luck for the future Richard!

I'm in magazines and it's tough enough here. God knows how it must feel to be working in regional papers. I wish them well.

Simple economics (but hard for hacks to appreciate).
Market forces sometimes get tough.
When they do, give the customer what they want.
Do research. Find out why they stopped buying.
Improve the product or drop it.
Find some new products.
Save on overheads. Including people: tough but necessary.
Wait for better times.

He's better off out of it. Closing their newspaper offices today, closing their newspapers tomorrow.

Alas, Richard, your spoon wasn't long enough. Good luck. We'll raise a glass to you at The Alcohol-Free Shop
