MEN plays cards to close to its chest on ‘youth portal’ launch | Print |  Email to a friend
Wednesday, 24 October 2007
MEN Media is at present declining to officially confirm or deny whether it is set to launch an entertainment portal to tap into Manchester’s “elusive” youth market.

Ruth Spratt of Channel M has recently been quoted as saying that the GMG owned group was on the brink of launching “a comprehensive site to attract the elusive 18 to 24 years old” demographic. It was suggested that this would be focusing on “breakthrough bands” and would feature a raft of media-rich video and audio content.

However, when quizzed by How-Do a spokesperson for MEN Media denied there was anything concrete to report on at present, noting: “The group is in an ongoing process of assessing its digital strategy and the best ways to take this forward.

“At this stage we have nothing to say to put more meat on the bones of the story than that. (The firm) is looking at all sorts of ways to tap into the youth and entertainment market, but ideas are in development now, rather than confirmed and ready to launch.”

If the entertainment portal is set to go live in coming months it will mark a further step forward into the digital arena for the MEN. The paper re-launched its main site in February this year and, as reported on How-Do last month, is preparing the ground for what it hopes will be the biggest jobs portal in the North West, The Jobsmine.

It's definitely happening. A journalist has been off-diary working on this for approximately a year. After such a long time, you'd expect it to be MySpace, YouTube, Drowned In Sound etc rolled into one. But we shall see...
