Yesterday’s Manchester Evening News transported readers back 50 years, as it reprinted pages from 1958, reporting on the tragedy of the plane crash that killed eight of the famed ‘Busby babes.’
The MEN marked the 50th anniversary of the disaster with a four page pullout section that included broadsheet pages from 6 and 7 February 1958.
The pages detailed the events that unravelled on the Munich runway, giving updates on Sir Matt Busby’s players and mourning the loss of Manchester United’s own ‘golden generation.’
In all 23 people perished in the crash, including many of the UK’s top sports journalists of the day.
In addition to the activity in the main paper, the MEN has also produced a separate 48 page commemorative paper, Munich Remembered, that is selling as a standalone product on newsstands.
Channel M also covered the anniversary event at Old Trafford last night, and hosted a feature interview with Sir Bobby Charlton, while the MEN’s website has featured extensive coverage of the anniversary.
