Barry McIlheney, appointed editor in chief of the Daily and Sunday Sport newspapers in January, is to take on a new role as group editorial director at Sport Media group.  Murray Morse, former editor of the Cambridge Evening News will be the new editor in chief.

McIlheney was hired by the company’s consultant editor James Brown.

Morse, a former news editor of the Daily Record in Scotland, resigned as editor of the Cambridge paper in April, a decision which led to staff at the paper passing a vote of ‘no confidence’ in management after his departure.

McIlheney’s new role as group editorial director will see him oversee both the papers in addition to Front magazine, SMG’s digital content and new publications.

The two papers were relaunched in April this year accompanied by a £1m plus promotional campaign but sales have continued to slip at the titles. The Sunday paper’s ABC for June showed a year on year decline of almost 20% with the daily dropping by over 10%.

It is believed that Morse intends to adopt more of a news-led direction for the papers than the more recent drift towards features, reflecting Morse’s news background in contrast to McIlheney’s twenty odd years in magazines with EMAP.
