The News of the World has confirmed that its chief feature writer, Jane Atkinson, is to relocate to Manchester, but has no exact date for the move set as yet.
Atkinson’s role at the UK’s most popular paper is a coveted one, but one that she earlier seemed destined to give up in a proposed defection to the People – a move that was leaked to the press in July. This position would have allowed her to relocate to Manchester, believed to be her family home, and become the Sunday’s chief northern writer. However, the NOTW then demonstrated the regard it held Atkinson in and apparently persuaded her to stay with the promise that she could relocate within her current role. This was a move that was reportedly set to happen in November, although a spokesperson for the paper imparted that no date has been agreed upon as yet. Atkinson herself informed How-Do that she could not comment on the relocation, leaving that to News International spokesperson Hayley Barlow. Barlow confirmed that it was not expected to happen in November, but would take place “within the next few months”. It is also unclear whether the relocation will involve Atkinson working from home or from an office within the city. Atkinson previously worked for The Sun, enjoyed a brief stay at the People and has now been at the NOTW for nine years.
