The MEN scooped a top prize at The Newspaper Awards 2007 and GMEN stable mate Trafford Park Printers was the other regional award winner.
The Awards, hosted by the Production Journal and headline sponsors Agfa and Fuji, bill themselves as ‘the only industry awards dedicated to newspaper and news media production’.
The continuing strength and geographical diversity of the region’s newspaper printing operations (in stark contrast to national editorial presence) was highlighted by four plants acknowledged for their various achievements: Broughton, Knowsley, Trafford Park and Oldham.
The Fujifilm Grand Prix Award at the ceremony dinner in London this week was awarded to News International’s free publication, thelondonpaper.
The GMEN (Guardian & Manchester Evening News) group overall did particularly with The Guardian picking up five awards including National Newspaper of the Year.
www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk was voted Electronic News Site of the Year, ahead of rival nominations www.bbc.co.uk/news , www.timesonline.co.uk and www.guardian.co.uk.
Paul Horrocks MEN editor Paul Horrocks said “It’s a fantastic victory and validates the serious news content that is produced in the paper and on the website.”
The judges praised the site for its mix of news and user contributions and said the site was “a contemporary looking site that successfully combines some of the style elements of a blog with the sensitivities of a serious news organisation. For a regional news site’s relative budget, MEN offers an impressive range of web delivery mechanisms.”
The judges continued: “The use of audio, video and RSS and the presentation of user contributions put this site in the same league as some of the nationals.”
The MEN’s head of online editorial Sarah Hartley said: “The journalists who produce the site are delighted."Following fast on the heels of the site’s recent redesign, this award comes at an exciting time for us and reflects the hard work of everyone involved in producing the best online news service for Greater Manchester.”
The other regional award winner was Trafford Park Printers for its work on The Guardian which won the category Most Outstanding Use of Colour. Several regional groups received commendations and nominations. Trinity Mirror Printing Oldham was nominated in the Most Innovative Technology of the Year category for its newspaper production system. The Environmental Newspaper Company of the Year category resulted in double delight for Trinity Mirror Printing Oldham which was ‘highly commended’ for its environmental certification initiatives while Broughton Printers in Preston was nominated for its collection/recycling brown waste policy.
Broughton Printers is owned by Richard Desmond’s Express Newspapers and Northern & Shell operations. In July this year, following a £14m investment announced last December, the Preston plant will begin production on a new press, claimed to be one of the most sophisticated in the UK. News International’s Knowsley plant also picked up a commendation for its environmental awareness programme.
In the weekly Newspaper of the Year category,The Cumberland News was highly commended. In the Niche Market Newspaper of the Year category, the Farmers Guardian based in Preston was commended.
